What's peoples thoughts on building a workshop from blue pallets.seen a few pics on the web,and must say I'm pretty impressed.

I wouldn't if I were you.

ALLBlue Pallets are owned by GKN (ISTR) and they don't take kindly to theft.

they are made of larch which is a good durable wood, id advise a light plane to get rid of the blue dye/paint, they do however replace broken slats with plastic slats, but very strong and good use of pallets, mind you they remain the property of chep and are never sold or given away, so just hypothetical talk of course lol

Paint can stay on really as you won't see any of it anyway when complete.

CHEP Equipment is only ever hired, never sold. It cannot legally be bought, modified, sold, exchanged for non CHEP equipment, or otherwise disposed of. If you do so, you are unfortunately breaking the law. Each CHEP pallet is stamped with the logo and legal title "Property of CHEP". If an old pallet it may be hard to read but if its blue - then its CHEP's and you should call their collection helpline as above.

Place I used to work used to store them by the thousand.

the blue paint on the pallets says it all, thats why id plane them smooth, hypothetically of course

They used some CHEP pallets on a groundforce once.
Big bollocking.
BBC or ITV issued an apology.

A good many years ago when I didn't really care or know any better I may or may not have been involved in making several ramps and grind boxes etc out of the pretty coloured pallets, we had a makeshift carpark skatepark setup which would quickly break down and lift (assuming there were at least 2 burly lads present) into the back of the car when we got moved on.

Not the most portable setup but those things will take an absolute beating and support LOADS of weight compared to the majority of cheap random pallets. Hefty worksurfaces indeed in the right configuration! Obviously I wouldn't condone this now...

Could you 'recover the pallets' saying they were dumped on your property, contact CHEP to collect them but say you are charging storage costs of £1 per pallet per day until they are collected. I imagine they would write them off.
Did a similar thing with some Halfords delivery crates that were mistakenly delivered to my workshop, told them that if they weren't collected within 7 days I would start charging for storage. A month later I sent an invoice, which went unpaid so I 'seized' the crates as payment.
Still have them now, very handy.

Do you not think they have people who trawl forums for posts like these?
I know for a fact they do, you only have to look at similar posts on other forums and it's not long before someone from CHEP shows up.

Can we not discuss illegal activities on here please, it's in the rules.

..and that;s why they don;t take lightly people stealing them. If they find out you'll not be a happy bunny that's for sure

Funny you should suggest this as I was only learnt about this the other day

biggest problem is "they remain the property of CHEP" so no matter what you do, charge storage/they wont pay anything and if you dont hand them over they will call the police, so you cant get out of it any which way

and the main means of doing so is handing into the Police if unclaimed after if thinks 30 days, it's yours.

So take them down to the plod and they'll look after them until you've got the base concreted
