Anyone done an FLT licence course ?

I have had my name down for a course to get my fork lift truck licence (dont yet know if its just counterballance or CB and Reach ) I have been lucky enough to get a place on a course paid for by the Job centre. As you can imagine they dont do too many of these, and had expected to wait a long time. After only two months I got a cancellation place and am starting Monday for the 5 and a half day course. Mon to Fri learning and Saturday morning take the test.

I have been on their website and several others like it, but cant seem to see any prices displayed. Not sure why this is, but it was the same when I took my SCATS card course a few month back.

I was just wondering, does anyone know what sort of cost these 5 day courses are ? (just interested to know how much it would have cost me)

I haven't a clue with regards to cost but I don't know how they can drag it out for 5 and a 1/2 days. Should be 2 days tops.

I took my licence when I worked for a fencing company many years back, weave in and out of pallets and stack some pallets for 10 minutes and ya passed



The guy also tested me on my Hiab Crane licence, one question he asked me was

If your on unstable ground and you put some blocks under the jacks and they sink what should you do ?

I replied

Just keep adding more blocks until they stop disappearing

he said

How long would you do that for ?

I replied

Till I ran out of blocks or the first ones turned to coal LOL

he saw the funny side and passed me

Did mine shortly after I started my apprenticeship. The only problem is that the trainers fork lift was only a 1.3t toyota and span the single rear wheel in the wet very easily! Mine was 3 days. With the classic video of cctv a driver backing up in a warehouse and ALL the racking going over.

i think mine was the best part of a week, even the trainer agreed it was too long ended up sending us home early most days and at about 9.30 on the day of the test!

For absolute beginners usually 4½ days, 4 days training and test on the last day, written part is mostly common sense.

Funniest one I did was a pedestrian fork truck licence, 2 of us from maintenance who would use the truck maybe once a week and one from logistics who would use it full time, we both passed and the logistics guy failed!

Yes 5 days is about right for a beginner. In that time I learnt counter balance, reach and motorised pallet truck. That was when I was on JSA at a place in Chesterfield. Free breakfast and dinner thrown in too!! Brilliant

We've been bummed by H&S as only one guy in our place has a FLT licence and he's never in when it's needed! So a few of us are having some sort of in-house training so that the relevant ar53s are covered, needless to say it's whatever costs the least and being in-house only, stops any of us from leaving to drive FLTs
I used a to drive a FLT occasionally in my Saturday job at a garden centre when I was 15; essentially the boss showed me the controls and said 'Don't hit anything'! I may have driven one more recently...
I also have MEWP ticket but I doubt if I use one twice a year. I also used to be ADR certified for Radioactives until they realised it was cheaper to use a specialist haulier...

Started today at Birkenhead. Even if there are only three of us to a truck, it still takes three times as long for everyone to have a practice. We are doing the reach three wheeler first, three days. Then the counter ballance (supposedly much easier) on Thursday Friday.

Telehandler test took 1 day.
warehouse picker truck (in house training) took an hour.
What can they possibly be teaching for it to take a week?

The courses are designed for people who have never seen an FLT before, if you had never driven, could you learn to drive a car and pass your test in a day?
