anyone can do there own work on there own property . as long as its done properly up to standard .the only time u will come unstuck is if u sell the property and they will ask if theres been any recent work carried out at the property and if u say yes they want to see the certificate for it thats it in a nutshell

Subject to not requiring Building Control inspection.

It's a pain in the ass tbh, it's just not clear enough for your average joe when it comes to the certification.

BC and the various bodies do as much as they can to put off people doing they own work for whatever reason.

Having seen the state of electrical safety after people that do not know what they are doing I think part p doesn't go far enough.


However forcing every qualified competent person to find £500 a year to join there little club to install a new circuit in a kitchen etc is not the answer.

Ban b&q etc from selling more than replacement sockets and light switches and make only wholesaler sell after prof of competence e.g. Jib cards which is widely used in industry all ready

You've kind of hit the nail on the head there. Though JIB cards wouldn't be needed IMO.

That should be enough to differentiate. I have seen some pretty horrific wiring done by amateurs. The worst I've seen was installed by a carpenter, you would have thought he might have asked one of his mates on site about how to do things.

I'm on with a job at the moment whole installation was unearthed as earth conductor had been twist joined behind plasterboard, got damp and corroded, junctions boxes buried in wall, terminal block behind skirting board where cable had been hit by nail during skirting board insulation. Basically a self rebuild while the bloke tried to convert to a sub standard nursing home. Guessing HMRC had "issues" as they took it to pay his tax bill

some of the worst work I see is done by people who know what they should do but cant be arsed, not sure what the answer is tho, current arrangements have not really made any difference except to the cost for decent tradesmen & customers

I understand the need for part p, I just don't want to be fleeced, or have to jump through hoops to approve my work, and there needs to be clearer rules and guidance for competent DIYers so they can carry out work to a safe standard and have it certified to that.

While I'm at work, I can install 3 phase equipment, power & lighting in offices etc. but "technically" can't install a new socket in my own home without paying someone to test & give me a piece a paper

I'm still in the middle of an extension to my house a mate with part p, has done all the work, he's a very good starky, but as his part p is held by his employee, he can't sign the work off

The building inspector told me about the 3rd party sign off about 4 months ago. I'll give him a call next week to see what he has to say

i allready told u 3d party testing has been aproved but wont be implemented till the back end of this year till they thrash out the details so your still stuffed till then

sorry il re phrase that i mentioned in the 1st post it was passed but is still under consultation and wont be ready till later this year .a bit stupid realy they should have got there act together then implemented it. not passed it then decided on how to proceed

I had the same issue for a long time. 600 Amp production line equipment was OK, adding a socket to my domestic ring mains was a no go.
