My dad drove a AEC Matador throughout the war, including North Africa (Alamein) then up through Italy, and into France etc. He showed me something like this when I was just getting into engines, and I thought it was very clever. I still think so! he lent it to one of his workmates to photograph and of course, it never came back. Thank you very much for that, it brought back dear memories of the old fella and the stories of what some of the lads got up to.

I've got my late father-in-laws RAF maintenance manual on Merlin engines together with his hand written amendments for later versions.

It's quite detailed, from running engine without oil to sieze it up to most efficient use of gunfire or explosives to disable it

great read,reminds me of some dodges we did on m/bikes-one particular,we got a puncture ,on the road under age no tax etc & stuffed the tyre full of grass,all without removing the wheel,& rode the 4 miles home.

I've got the same book as Rtcomp, 1937 version, published in 1938, English version though. It's been sat in the bookshelf for 40 odd years. I was going to put it out for the charity stand at the local steam fair in the summer. It cost 5 bob (25p) in 1938!

That's about £30 in today's money.

I was told that during the war people used to remove a conrod & piston to reduce fuel consumption, although that sounds a bit unlikely to me.

its nice to think i have reminded someone of his late father.
its also great to read of some of the field repairs that have been done.
ive seen a holed piston on a two stroke bike fixed with a self tapping screw.
it would be nice to keep adding your field repairs, just to see whats possible
you never know, they may come in handy one day.
