clarke's drill press....

hey up all

i recently acquired a clarke's CDP 201P bench drill, smashing thinks me, it only needs a belt

then i realise (from the writing in the lid) it's a twelve speed- the idler wheel in the centre is missing

it's the bigger of the two

this set up can be seen in the smaller one

the larger one is a clarkes make, the saller one is from aldi, yet the strange thing is that the (centre) idlers will fit perfectly into the larger drill (made at same chinese factory?)

does anyone know whether spares can be bought?, ie, the idler assembly + belts (pulley, bearings and idler lever)

i'm wondering here if weldequipe would know (he seems very knowlegeable on clarke's stuff)

Yes, you can get clarke spares very easily normally.
Id be tempted to run as is, just whack a belt on there.

Does it need a idler on there as my old British just has 2 pulleys and you move the motor back to tenstion the belt

it's a sort of cranked pivoting thingy, when the motor is adjusted to tension the belt, it pivots the idler and tensions the far end belt too- clear as mud eh??

here's the hole it should fit in (along with the pulley's from t'other drill)

i reckon i could make the bits on my old lathe- i'll just have to find some ally (though these are steel or iron) big enough to turn a pulley block.....

The centre pulley has several different sized grooves on it, so you set the speed by a combination of the positions of the two belts

It may well be worth getting the middle pulley as it means the drill will have a much slower low speed, which is really handy for big bits or stainless drilling.

I wouldn't try it without - the gears either side taper upwards, so moving the belt wouldn't really change the spindle speed away from motor speed which will be too fast. Need the reversing middle pulley for that and to offer further reduction as one of the slower design speeds will probably be the nicest for average work.

Can't think of a quick way to make all the bits for the centre pulley and mounting. I'd use the aldi bits and keep the aldi one for spares.

i'll do just that and in the meantime, i can be making (well, attempting!!) an idler assembly.....

this drill has never been used and i managed to get it gratis, i was at the local dump and had just cut a big old (28 tube) sun bed up and got it in the skips when i spied this chap struggling with the drill head so i cadjed it from him, along with the rest of the drill
it turned out his father in law ad bought it but (i think) he died, poor chap....
it don't matter really if i have to spend a few quid on it as a result....

the strange thing is that the small drill has a 550watt motor and 16mm chuck whereas the big one has a 375watt motor and a 13mm chuck
the small one goes down to 280rpm and upto 2350

the bigger one goes 180rpm upto 2740 (with the correct idlers obviously)

if its a clarke i would give machine mart a bell they should be able to hook you up with the bits you need

If you can turn one of the pulley wheel upside down it will give you a few different speeds I have an old bench drill that works this way

I think maplins do some cheep en chearfull ones as well, dont know if they would handle the current but im I bet someone here would.

These seem to be triac controllers and as far as I know would not be suitable for the induction motors used in these drills. They'd be OK for universal motors (commutator type AC/DC) run on AC. Used in washing machines (most makes), drills and vacuum cleaners.

Maplins controllers are for DC motors upto 15v and use pulse width modulation. I'd like to try one of the these on the SIP wire feed motor, see relevant thread.

Or, use the aldi idler in the clarke, as its a more rigid better made drill more suitable for low speed heavy work, and put a straight belt on the aldi one and keep it for high speed drilling ops in plastic/alu/wood etc. Perfect, no more messing round
Thing is you'll find you never use the aldi one
I had a decent drill press set up along side some cheesey performance power one in exactly the same scenario and found myself using the meddings so much I gave the cheesey one away to my father in law one day.

Im in the process of converting one of my sensitive drills to use a vfd, its already 3 phase though, and I just had to buy a vfd to suit. You can get vfd's that are single phase in/3 out if your really determined to follow that route, the important thing is to get a vfd that varies the vector (of the phaser angle) to do the speed control, as they wont loose torque at lower rpms. Cost you more than a new drill press to do this if your starting from a single phase drill press mind...
