I need gears of all shapes and size for use in some of my creations, some will be working, some will be for decorative purposes. Does anyone know of any breakers yards in the Herts/Beds/Bucks area where I can pick up old gearboxes cheap? Are there any other places where I would be likely to find old machinery? So far I've been extracting bevel gears from burnt out angle grinders. They will come in handy but are on the small side.

I would stick to gearboxes - best ratio of gears to mass you can find.
Set up a search on ebay for gearbox under a certain price and within x miles - whatever you think is reasonable, depending on your circumstances. More gears than you can shake a stick at. Although I expect a visit to whatever scrappy comes up as closest on google will suffice.
Axles and old machinery (lathes, other tools with changeable gear ratios) will yield alternative gear types. Easy to find.

i have 3 smart car gearboxes going for scrap, perfect working order but never go wrong so cant sell them for much, i could do you a box of gears if you like, youd have to pay+postage, as id strip them down, i can also get you lots of gearboxes for scrap value

have you tried your local car breakers and told them what you want and what you are wanting it for?
you never know you could mabe do a deal you buy the first one then strip it and keep the steel cogs, then swap the alloy shell for the next one that they are having trouble selling
they can get more money selling the cleaned up scrap alloy than leaving it in the car when they crush it!!!! so they may go for it

They may not be the cheapest but everything they do is the best it can be. I had an Range Rover autobox fail at 95K, the Ashcroft replacement has all the problems designed out and has done another 130K+ with no issueswould doubt if ashcroft would let anything go cheap
They are a good bunch of lads who really know their stuff and would probably like to see the scrap getting used for something interesting.
