I'm going to use stainless welding rod for marble marchine tracks and tig weld the track spreaders. I will also need to butt join rods. Is it possible to fusion weld them or would it be better to clamp with a small gap between them and use filler rod?

What grade are you going to use as they are not easy to bend ?

I think (been a while since i did it) i decided joining mild steel 3.2 rods worked best at about 10-15A with 1mm filler. don't know how well that will translate to stainless though. Also, bending 3.2s is easy enough until you start trying to get tight precise bends to stay in the right place.
I had a go at welding 1mm to 1.6, that sort of worked but i was burning through about 1 in 5 welds and having to start again.
