Welding backing tape

While searching for welding products came across welding backing tape.

It says that it helps with back purging and by sticking this tape to the back of the weld there is no need to back purge the parts to be welded.

Just thinking if this works and if it does can it be used to weld stainless steel tubing without purging ?

It may help the shape but it wont stop contamination / oxidisation

Its mostly used when rooting with FCW

On stainless you have to be careful that all the adhesive is removed

It works, I tried it several times. In fact I bought it by English company.
What I want to say is following, those tapes may not be called backing tape. If one say "backing" it is similar to backing ceramic tiles, and at ceramic tiles, backing = supporting weld pool.
These tapes will not support welding pool, but will do purging, they will protect the metal from back-side. Therefore, I would call it just "purging tape", not "supporting tape".
At single side welding of stainless steel, with stuck "purging tape" one should use welding technique as the root is open, not the technique over ceramic tile.
After welding, there is no sugaring at the back side of the root pass, but there are some smut on the base metal 10 mm away from welding seam because of burnt adhesive of aluminium tape. It is easily removed by ss brush.
By the way, "purging tape" is made of fiberglass and aluminium foil to be stuck on the backside of the weld.
I highly recommend it, it is excellent! As the producer is English company, I guess, you may get a sample by them.
