Knackered Herbert pillar drill

These days I circle gumtree like a vulture looking for a bargain.

Someone has just listed a Herbert pillar drill with a burnt out motor. I can't find too much info on these things online.

I guess my question is how realistic is it to think it could be brought back to life?

not good at all take a good look at the picture thats the rotor stuck up on top of drill and the stator sits on top of the casting. and its a monster

I haven't seen what looks like a directly driven pillar drill before. What I really need is a "how I restored an old Herbert drill" thread somewhere.

Weve a bank of 4 herberts at work, one has a dead motor, never looked into repairing, just use the other 3


They are mounted directly into gearboxes on ours i think, might need to make some form of adaptor if you wanted to retrofit a new flange mount motor...

just noticed it had a 6 speed motor on it so therefore the gearbox will just be high and low speed. so that puts a flange mounted single speed motor out of the question

TBH I think that's as good as scrap, the motors were made for herbert by herbert, there unique winding's, mountings and I think even speed.

Fit it with an indirect drive twin pulley arrangement? Personally, I'd think the shipping costs would make it unfeasible to consider. Definitely one hell of a chunk of metal for anyone who could pick it up themselves though.

That makes sense with regards to the 6 speed motor, it does sound a bit niche. The hunt continues....

That's a nice drill you have there. It's a fair point, but I honestly think, with something like that large Herbert that it's easily worth £70 in its current condition, funds allowing, of course. I bet the scrap value alone would be somewhere around that money? That would be a drill well worth having if it could be adapted/repaired.

I bought a Herbert drill from my local scrappy 25 years ago for £15 wired it in & away it went.
Only had a single speed motor though with 6 speed box, also had auto reverse box for tapping. Fantastic bit of kit. That multi speed motor looks very expensive to fix though.

I passed on that drill in the end.

But I've just bought a fobco floor standing pillar drill for £60.

It's got a 3 phase motor and I don't think the chuck is there but oh well, if it turns out to be a mistake it wasn't my most expensive one.

well a new 240v motor and a chuck isnt going to brake the bank as long as the rests in good nick and u can sell the 3 phase motor or give me it for a tenner

Tell you what, if it isn't a total croc I'll give you the 3 phase for the cost of postage. I think that's fair considering the amount of help I'm going to need to get it going

This morning I went to collect my impulse ebay purchase of a Fobco Star pillar drill.

Well it seems ok at a glance, the pulleys turn freely, there is still grease on everything and there's not too much rust. The exisiting motor is a Brook Compton 370w 1425 RPM 3 phase. Someone had also mounted what I assume is a 3 phase fuse box next to it. After taking pictures of the connections I have removed both of these.

The good news is the pulleys are held on with grub screws rather than being keyed so if a new motor has a bigger shaft that shouldn't be a problem.

So I need a new motor and quill. Has anyone any thoughts about how to go about this? I was also wondering, should I seek to replace the existing bearings or grease?
