i already have a mig 170 someboby told me that i could get a spool gunto fit so that i could weld aliumin is this true if not which is the bet one to get for under £1500punds

You don't need a spoolgun to weld ally... it gets around wire feeding issues but that's more a case of nasty/cheap/cheapnese wire feeds rather than MIG in general.
What sort of thickness ally are you wanting to weld? Ally needs more power than steel due to it's thermal conductivity so max thickness drops. At the same time thin ally with MIG is a proper PITA if it needs to be air tight and/or neat so (posh & spendy synergic MIGs aside) below 2mm is typically considered TIG territory by most

Effectively you need an AC/DC TIG to weld ally, i'm probably wrong but IIRC multiprocess machines are generally DC only. MMA/TIGs always are (any DC stickwelder can be used for basic TIG functions, 'real' TIGs are sold as TIGs not MMA/TIG inverters and can also do stick welding)

I've been looking into possibly buying an inverter type ac/dc tig also, within your price range R-Tech followed Thermal Arc seem to be the choice, imo.

Unless you can find a higher quality s/hand machine for the same money...

You could also look at a HandyTig 180 ACDC Control Pro If you wanted a non-Chinese Inverter around your budget.

For £1500 you could get yourself a Portamig Tec-Tig 185, not chinese, well under the £1500 budget and you could also get the foot pedal and still be under budget. I have never tried tig but I do have a Portamig 215 mig welder and it is a great machine, very sturdy adn made in England....
