Giving out the V5C Reference Number?

What's your opinion on doing so?

Have sold a car by eBay, seems the person who won it has purchased a number of cars in the past so can't seem him being a dodgy one. But being the first car I've sold through eBay I'm obviously a little wary of giving anything out I shouldn't.

Says its something to do with checking the mileage, motinfo.gov maybe?

Or is it a complete scam?

I don't think you have anything to worry about giving out the reference number, he probably just wants to check the vehicle out with DVLA. I have done this a few times.

just give him the vosa ref no of the test doc not the log book unless you have been paid in cash not paypal by paying you in cash he has no comeback on you with paypal he has

No not been paid yet, hoping it'll end up being cash on collection, as it'll save any Paypal fees, etc.

Given him the MOT Test Number, hopefully that will suffice, if not, I'll be relisting.

With the reference number and registration you can check tax status and MOT history. He probably just wants to do that. Saying that, if he's won it then it's academic, unless he's looking for a way to wriggle out.

You can do all the checks with the reg plate info. I would not give out the ref number as they can then do all the things that the real owner can do like order a new log book or tax it (or a clone).

For a hpi check to be verified you need reg, mileage, V5 serial number and issue date so they can cover you for fraudulent V5 documents.

Try and get a note testing pen, particularly if it's £50 notes

You can't do the online MOT history check without that reference number, and if they ordered a log book without the new owner slip DVLA will send a letter asking you to confirm you sold the car.

I noticed when I mot'd my van yesterday the past mileages were on the mot from past 3 years. Not seen it before, I dare say he can check you haven't messed with the mileage recently.

The tester pointed that out to me when I had mine done in Jan, useful when I sell the car as it matches the service book mileages

If you're a trader and pay the subscription to HPI you can do a full check with just the reg number.

Ive just done a check through the AA online on the car Im about to buy.
I just needed the licence number.

But if you want to be covered by the garantee against the info being incorrect you need to put in the extra info like the reference number and chassis numbers and stuff.
Covers you if they havnt found any finance against the car or accident damage info.

The one im buying came out clean right across the hpi check.

I asked for the mot or V5 reference last time I bought a car. Useful to see MOT warnings over the last few years.
