One of the apprentices at work recently did a welding course and was telling us how half the course seemed to be H&S, PPE etc.
So today he is given the job of welding some brackets for a job, saw him setting up and pointed out his designer bright blue & orange nylon topped trainers were not the most appropriate footwear for welding!
Half hour later he's now wearing boots but only got a tee shirt on as he thought bare arms would be OK as he wasn't doing long runs.
Made me wonder how much of the course had actually sunk in.

doesnt your firm make all employees wear safety gear , we work for the councill and they make u wear green high viz jackets in punters houses and safety boots havent a problem with the boots but the jacket is to distinguish between the worker and punter

Sounds like the story where they make psychiatric residents wear slippers so they can distinguish who's whom.

Dont be daft !---------They do that so that they cant run as fast!!! and then won't fall and hurt themselves !

I allways get my sons, if they are helping me to put their steelies on , coz they are very handy for scotching a car ( the boots,-- not throwing the lads under the wheels) if it runs away when pushing it, see I think about H&S !

H and S course probably tells them how to colour code their hi viz, what colour safety tape to use to surround the area (indoors and out) and which form to fill in on Tuesdays. I doubt if they care about them burning their arms or ruining their trainers by setting fire to them, as long as the right kind of fire extinguisher is available, and clipped to the wall using an approved bracket.

lol i was working at a funny farm a few years ago. every morning a guy in a suit went by with his notes under his arm and asked me how it was going ok i said when i asked the nurse who the doc was she said he isnt the doctor hese a patient

Just wait til the lad burns a hole in his shoe, socks and skin! he wont be so sharp then.

More than likely the no it all no nothing will end up with arc eye in no time at all

Nope!, that really surprised me when I started there last year, the only stipulation is hi-vis in the lorry yard and stores, even that is ignored at times!

When i did my level 2 welding course the other year they test you on the diffrent fire exstiguisher colors and uses. I ended up arguing with the examiner as they said i had the color of 1 of them wrong he said it is black! i walked him over to the corner where the exstiguishers were and pointed it out as it was red in the workshop he didnt realy no what to say.
And they make you sit down and watch a H&S video and i was larfing at most of it and the lack of comon scence some people have.
Even after watching the video a few weeks later 1 lad decided to weld heavy metal in a t-shirt the next week he cam in and the skin was still pealing off!

I am an apprentice and we have had to sit through PPE and H+S stuff. I agree with most of what others have already said; some of the stuff like fire extinguisher colours and 'Tell us where a first aid kit can be found in your workplace' questions seem a bit desperate, but on the whole I think it is worthwhile part of the course (LV.2 Light Motor Vehicle mechanics/maintenance). I think it is part of the course more because City and Guilds feel it can't NOT be part of the course, if that makes sense.

I've just done C&G 3268 Level 1 TIG and of the 15 written questions i had to answer 5 were on H&S. All 5 had to be correct for a pass. The other 10 questions were on the TIG process and only 5 of the 10 had to be correct for a pass.
