What kind of steel??

Can anyone tell me what kind of steel this is please?? It has been used as handrail/protection in a factory. Is it just galvanised steel or something else??

Its just common mild steel galvanised handrail, nothing special

That does look galv and a lot of industrial handrails are galv.

If you are welding it and grind the galv off, the stuff on the inside is still there and burns off when welded.

Thanks both. Making up some rear bumperettes for my landy with it, so will get the flapper wheel on it before I weld it up.

Would steeping it in citric acid solution remove the galv, inside and out?

Dont inhale the fumes produced by the galvy tube when being welded as you may get something once called galvy flu. It makes you feel very sick for a few hours. I once read of a welder who died from complications. Keep your head well out of the way.

I have had a couple of doses back in the 60's and can promise you it is not very nice.

Tried this the other day with a very weak citric solution (2%). Yes it does remove galv pretty well.
