steel prices!!!

just paid £120 for a 1000x1500x5mm sheet of mild steel is it me or is that a bit expensive?

Thats a non standard sheet size, did they shear it as well?

A mild steel price guide spread sheet would be good, i never buy sheet realy, normaly round and square stock for machining

Depends so much who you are, Punterw who look like they don't know what they are asking for will get charged well over the odds, We pay £66 for a FULL sheet of 5mm.

For 2 x 1's we pay roughly a tenner a 1mm, so probably just over 50 quid for a 2 x 1 x 5mm plate. I'd expect a joe public price at maybe 80 quid for the plate, and a tenner for the cut.

No, just a rough rule of thumb from what we have paid previously.

Ok but when you get a qute from the supplier?. I know when a friend of mine where buying in steel for a company we worked for all plate prices were based on weight
but they were usually bying straight from rukko or archelor-mittal.

but they were usually bying straight from rukko or archelor-mittal.

If we buy a decent load of whatever section, usually structural, it will be sold on a weight basis. i.e £ per tonne. Anywhere between 600 and 900 a tonne depending on what it is.

For smaller loads sheets/section it will be sold per length/plate.

Dont think paying cash carries much weight these days.
People have to account for sales of materials etc.

OH BTW these prices are plus VAT.

I think you will find that Lawn boy's 'Full' sheet was 1x2 mtr.

If you want to complain, try it here. I wanted a 2x1 mtr x25mm sheet. It was around €450+tax, and that was about 5 yrs ago.
Now, telephone nos.

Well work usually buys a pack which is by and large the cheapest way. If it's something we don't use much then we get individual sheets, You think mild sheet is expensive, A 1.5mm sheet of 316 S/S grained and wrapped is £133 ex the taxmans share.

You should use 2mm ali chequer instead . I can get that for £80 a sheet. lol

But seriously, to be fair I did not think the mild steel I was quoted for was relatively that expensive it was when I saw this " We pay £66 for a FULL sheet of 5mm. " I thought a full sheet meant a full 8 x4 sheet or metric equivalent.

Just shows you cant always take things at face value.

should be able to get almost a full length of 40x40 box for that price!!!
