Sorry for the basic nature of this enquiry - what do you use a "half-centre" for on a lathe?

Why is it necessary over Eg, a "normal" lathe centre?

Why is it necessary over Eg, a "normal" lathe centre?

so that you can face the shaft you're turning,it allows you to reach the centre as a normal centre will foul the tool & leave a spigot in the end of your shaft.
