What does this do exactly.just got mine running again now,so thanks to all those who pointed me in the right direction.

its a switch that opens contact with weights on springs on the rotor .when the motor reaches full speed it disconects the starting windings

probably a bit of wd40 on the shaft where it slidesthats what i did on me pedestal drill after using it for 40 years just squirted a bit in. got fed up of hitting the motor to free it
The motor on my drill sticks sometimes as well but I`m not as uncouth as you
hitting it with a hammer, I just turn the chuck by hand an off it goes 
its like its owner really ceases up after a little period of inactivity

Just stripped it really and stuck it back together,why can't everything be that simple to fix
