r-tech inverter TIGs...

Considering buying either the TIG 201 AC/DC or the TIG 251 AC/DC, but i'm struggling to find the power requirements for either. I'm going to be fitting a 16a socket in the workshop, will this be up to the job for either? not sure i can run a cable for a 32a supply.

Also anything else i should be considering in that price range? I'd consider used but i do like the idea of a warranty.

I run my r-tech 201 through a blue 16amp plug and a 16amp breaker,
Have run it at around 180-190amps on ac and the breaker didn't trip so hopefully will handle the 200amp output max? If not i'll simply fit a 20amp breaker as the cable is 20amp rated.

thanks. I think me needing the full power of either machine is a long way off anyway, going to speak to my electrician about options and go from there. The actual underground cable to the workshop will be fine, but the cable that's connected to inside the house isn't.

Yeah, i was being incompetent. the 201 is 18a the 251 is 32a. says so right there in the spec

I think at least to start with i'd be ok with either on a 16a plug, i dont see me using the higher power options for a while yet but i don't want to spend a lot of money just to find the machine i've got isn't up to the job in 6 - 12 months time. I'd rather buy too much welder and not be able to use it to it's full potential until i get the supply sorted out than have to buy another one because the one i get isnt up to the job.

Take a look at the Tecarc 206, (now the 216) fitted with fans on demand, which means the machine isn't sat there sucking in dirty air when not needed, they kick in when the inverter reaches a certain temperature, reducing failures due to pcb's being shorted out with grinding dust, and also reducing running costs.

This will run on a 13 amp plug top up to around 140 amps, and will be very happy on a 16 amp supply.

It's all down to power factor correction, and the efficiency of the inverter design. The Parweld XTI 201 for instance is a very power hungry machine, needing 21 amps, and the Tecarc needing just 16 amps when maxed out.....

Thanks. I had a look at the Tecarc initially when i was deciding what welder to go for, and i can't remember why i decided against it. i'll have another look.

Tig 251 arrived today. For some reason when switching it on it trips the breaker for the garage sockets, and the one in the house for the whole garage, unless i switch the sockets off at the breaker, turn the welder on at the welder switch and then turn the sockets back on (which then turns on the welder) Runs fine after that up to 85a, not tried it any higher yet.

went for the r-tech over the tec-arc as after speaking to them on the phone they gave me a deal i couldn't turn down.

I'm certainly not an electrical expert but it might be that you have B type breakers and need to swap them for C type motor rated of the same amperage rating,
they arent so sensitive from the initial surge of turning the welder on,

Had to fit a C type breaker on my 13amp socket circuit as my mig would trip it on anything over about 150amps on a B breaker, no problems now.

they arent so sensitive from the initial surge of turning the welder on,

Just checked and I do indeed have b type breakers. I'll get them replaced woth c types and see if that helps. Only thing that worries me is that the breaker on the back of the welder tripped too.
