Cleaning fuel injectors

Wotcha.

I've these grubby injectors to clean up before fitting back onto the tractor. What is the best way to properly clean them up?

Do they need any form of 'setting up' before putting back in?

You need a special test rig to set them up as the pressures are so high. Best you can do with out it is plug all holes and wire brush clean. Tollerances are very close so do not dismantle. If you refit them to the injector pipes and pump but still not in the cylinder head you could check the spray pattern by cranking the engine but fuel will get every where so take precautions against FIRE. VERY important keep all body parts well clear. The pressure is enough to inject fuel through the skin.

I've always done my petrol injectors with carb cleaner and a stiff brush ,and use redex in the tank ...I would imagine carb cleaner or diesel redex would clean the outsides ok.....ultrasonic baths are used by the pro's and they can check the operation but look at £25 + an injector for them to clean...

just take them to an agent and get them tested thats all i did on me perkins engine .its worth doing

Just get them pop tested at local diesel shop they will tell you if they are any good that type can be rebuilt quite easy

mine just went phut and splashed allover showing hardly any pressure after a regrind they cracked open under pressure in an even spray

Wire wheel on a brench grinder to clean, have them "pop tested" and new copper washers...

As mentioned, take them to a diesel service place. They should be able to clean test and reset them for not unreasonable money.

I've got similar job to do on my old tractor.
Curent intention is to buy new nozzles which are the bit's that wear out on the end and attempt to make by own pop tester using a bottle jack, pressure gauge and some hydraulic fittings. They're quite simple google search for them.

Common setting seems to be to set injectors to 10 or so bar below original spec of pop pressure to allow for wear in a used pump, unless injector pump is also overhauled and brought back to original spec.

Looking at that injector I think it would be safe to assume it may need a refurb.

If it's for a common application very often they can be bought as exchange set for not huge amounts of money.

As mentioned, the nozzles wear and the break pressure needs to be set using shims to meet the correct tolerance.

If you do go down the route of testing them yourself please be aware of the risks of diesel at very high pressure.

It's worth having them rebuilt properly as you can get quite a lot of dribbling and a bar spray pattern which dosen't help cold starting atall, Coupled with bad compression can make it even worse!

Filthy smelly stuff, get them set up properly, was all ways told NOT to wire brush the tips! Can ruin pattern, just wash in clean petrol & take to diesel shop

Soft brass wire brush is fine but never use steel ones.
