Over filtering oil ?

Is it possible to filter engine oil too much ? I ask because someone recommended to me to use an inline filter on the return line in addition to the normal feed line filter on a triumph trident t150 engine.
I was worried about the ability of the pump to maintain pressure and flow.

What do you think ? Over doing it ?

Theres no such thing as 'over filtering oil' but, you can only remove as much rubbish as the filter is capapble of. The standard filter should be more than capable of handling whatever goes through it. Change oil and filters more often if you are worried. It is important to keep the oil pressure maintained, so unless you have a oil pressure gauge, use only one filter.

Its a long cartridge type one brightspark , its the only british made bike engine i can think of that had a proper filter and not a token bit of mesh in the sump, pre hinkley triumph obviously. I did worry that if there was too much oil in the system it might be difficult to get the oil up to temp, i had problems with condensation in the oil in the 500 twin on short hops. The trident also has a cooler plumbed in, i don't know if it has a thermostat, but i doubt it. I also don't know if it was actually needed for european machines as most were sold in america.

Older engines either bikes or cars usually had much less oil pressure due to component tolerances weren't as tight as they are today, and as the engines wear as do all, those gaps will become bigger and reduce oil pressure further more, to the point where the engine is too worn for use and needs to be rebuilt.

Combine the restriction of two filters with a less than new engine and this equals a possible oil starvation to the engine.

Hi, I used to run a BSA B40 in trials, and after an expensive rebuild was quite annoyed to have the big-end collapse due to the cack in the new oil-in frame set-up releasing particles of flux, even after a good soak in cleaner. Fitted an in-line disposable canister filter, and was surprised at the amount of poo still collecting after a year.

Fitted an in-line disposable canister filter, and was surprised at the amount of poo still collecting after a year.

Those oil in frames were trouble from day one, the problem was they never bothered cleaning out the frame during manufacture, seat height too high and frame cracking centre stand lugs.
The unusual thing was with the triple is that it had a gear pump instead of a plunger which was the normal triumph fitment.
