Isn't that something to do with inadequate airflow?

I've made loads of bottle burners, simple is always best, good vent control like you have, simple door, good flue etc etc.. nice photos and ideas here..

The normal way to avoid sooting up is to run the fresh air input over the glass, or just keep it running hot. The shape of the dish makes the former a bit difficult. And when you close it down for the night, the slow burn produces creosote which sticks to the 'glass' nicely.

i was thinking about changing the flue, from a 5" to a 8" for the fist 3 ft because i have an empty CO2 bottle i can not get rid of, i was wondering if this would help the flow for the smoke, and has anyone ever fitted a baffle ?? to direct the heat towards the watertank inside the fire

I wouldn't have thought they would stand up to stove temperatures. (The plastic ones certainly wont )
