Has anybody on here bought a compressor and sand blaster set up from a from a company called KMS ?

If so are the products any good. They usually advertise on ebay.

I bought one of these, no compressor inc. lol. Seems fine but gobbles air, as they do.

at least the rubbishy hood doesnt take any air to use i bet your gasping for air after 30 seconds use though

Iv'e been away for a bit and coming back to the subject of sand blaster n compressor.

I want the set up to clean up my old discovery axle n parts. It wont be used for a professional workshop just my own project so i don't want to pay the earth but it needs to do a good job.

Can anybody help here?

without spending mega bucks a 14cfm compressor and an ebay pot fitted with a carbide jet is about the entry level .2 comps coupled together will get u there a lot quicker giving 28cfm and will hold the pot at 90psi pressure no bother

I have that model and I wouldn't say it was good but it does do the job at a fair price.

It blocks quite easily and then you have to dismantle it. The tips wear very quickly (blasting garnet) and I invested in a quality tungsten carbide one in the end. You have to constantly fine tune the grit delivery.

A single phase compressor won't keep up with a 1/8" nozzle.

I think most small compressors are rated 'free air delivery'. So that 14cfm compressor will deliver 14cfm in theory simply by calculating its cylinder capacity and RPM

BUT

it will deliver nothing like that at 100psi.

A 3mm blasting nozzle uses 21cfm at 100 psi and you would need a compressor around 4hp to feed it continuously. The compressor you showed would give about 10% duty cycle ie you could blast one minute in ten which is frustrating but if you don't have much to do... You can get 2mm nozzles but I don't have figures for those.

I can't comment on the home-made blasting pot; it may be better than the Chinese ones it may be worse.

You will need good water separation - the compressor working hard gets hot, produces moisture, makes the sand sticky, blocks the rig.

Those ceramic nozzles don't last long. About an hour if you're lucky.

Don't forget you don't have to blast at full pressure all the time, it depends on the paint and grit.

I've just done a job with worn glass grit at 5 bar and original Lambretta paint which is quite thin. In fact with small items too much pressure will blow them out of your hand.

Where possible I strip paint off chemically first, this saves a heck of a lot of time, grit and electricity.

I've used my "Ebay" pot with a 4mm nozzle (very worn out 2.5mm nozzle) and coarse grit. The heavier the grit the less air it takes.

I generally start with new grit and a wide nozzle and as the grit wears down I reduce the nozzle size.

Another point to bear in mind, as the day wears on the compressed air gets hotter if you work the compressor hard. At the end of the day the warm air is less effective than cold and you may as well stop and carry on next day.

I bought one of these Clemco TC nozzles in the end. Works much better than the ceramic ones.
