I work for myself where i contract my welding company out for a certain number of weeks, mainly to the highest bidder basically, i have quite a large selection of tools, Clamps and machines that i really hate just leaving things loose in a workshop, in case they go walkies.

I had an idea to get say a 10ft or 20ft container where i can store all my tools, machines etc and have it all wired up so all i need to do is plug it in via an extension lead, where ever i'm working, A bit like a mobile workshop.

I can get it moved from site to site as and when required

That way all my gear is locked, and alarmed, i'm happy

Has anyone ever done anything like this ??

A firm we do the odd bit for has done the same, container fitted out. They do mainly SS food industry work.
Benches along one side, racking along the other.
Handy if you tend to spend a decent amount of time working in one place.

A firm that fits egg plants have a container on back of a wagon and do very much the same door in end and side. It has generator and comp in they travel to job drop the steps and get on with the job!

Something like this would suit me down to the ground, I'm normally working for a company for about 3 to 4 months, so this was something i was thinking off.

Where i am at the moment i need to transport everything in my car and when i have it there its a hassle to find somewhere i can keep all my bits together. I've already had a 6 " moore and wright square go missing

No not really i have a couple of 3 phase migs, a plasma, I'd like to include a bench i don't really want a trailer cos its handy for anyone with a towbar to take.

A container is a bit more solid and less of an opportunity theft

council round Doncaster had some air monitoring trailers that looked like a containers but with wheels on and A frame

the wheels must have been on a moving axle when left on site A frame had a big steel cover over it and the wheels either came off or axle was on rams and folded up inside the trailer so it just dropped the box to the floor plenty of strength in a container to make removable A frame so it fits inside so when left all it looks like is a container box

so some big indispension units 4 of four sets of axle frames on a pivot point
and four rams or screw jacks to wind it up and downs brakes would need to be by cables for axle movement

You could invest in a 7.5t box truck and convert the box that way you can have a workshop just how you like it, knowing all your tools and equipment are with you where ever you go.

but they just nick the truck unless you take the wheels off
but not very secure is a wagon body

Beat me to it. But as octo says easy to nick but then easier to manage that risk compared to leaving on possibly insecure site

Is a container not going to be expensive to move and could be hassle time a logistics without your own transport? mostly units and drags with hiabs so a move is going to be a couple of hundred, and probably going to take a few+ days between each move.

Hook loader frame would be my choice then you can put what you want on it and the move is less painless and cheaper.

However last containers I bought were on a "deal" at £1500+Vat, even a skid frame for a hookloader is going to be £800+Vat without anything on it.

Containers are noisy, cold in winter and hot in summer, in winter everything will rust and it'll freeze through the night and as it thaws drip water over everything. Personally i'd go for a 7.5 ton box van preferably an old fridge van because it will be well insulated.

I'd personally go with one of the military mobile workshops myself, as someone else mentioned. Other than putting your own gear in there, it's pretty much ready to go as is, and they usually come with a lathe, compressor etc. as standard.

Youre not thinking of welding inside it are you. It would get a bit smokey but you could install a fan.
Someone mentioned the Army. They put a tender out a few years ago for something similar. A company named MERKLE got the order. It was more of a multi-process trailer though rather than a container.

Is there an echo in here lol. Seriously though, there's palace in west York's that sell ex army as Matt said. Had a Harrison m300 with millinghead benches genny extraction. 7.5k istr I doubt the lathe had been used. So that's worth 6-9k alone

The military machinery wagons can have a lathe in the vehicle molunted box body , weldig gear ( gas or tig )

Then there was a PST or power supply trailer towed behind it had a decent compressor & big genny plus a techalemit oil/grese lub plant .
You can get all sorts of combinations

The old yellow BT Sherpa van box body demountable containers make handy towable containers if set on a trailer bed

Put " ex mod vehicle sales " in your search engine .. there are all sorts of places to find such things
There is a lovely Luton body on what looks like a Ford chassis for 3.5 K on Mod - Sales . com ..it might have a decent tail lift as well .
