Any joiners?

I'm in the market for a new portable site saw. I don't want a flip top, just a dedicated table top. Space is a premium and I don't want to be lugging much more than 25kg in and out of the van.


I'm looking at the following and would appreciate any feedback you may have.


Bosch GTS 10 J

An optional stand is not a requirement. I'm more interested in performance. I'll be ripping everything from 6mm ply to soaking wet 220mm joists. Depth of cut isn't top of the list but there is always that time when it's handy. Although if the blade can rise to 80mm, I just hope the saw can cut 80mm.

I'd go with the biggest motor at a quick glance,
Being a chippy myself i know what its like cutting wet timber that wants to close up on the blade.
The bosch is highest rated at 1800w but may not win in other areas.

Got an old Elu flip saw myself but rarely use it for ripping.

meself, ive a electra becham, one of the older ones no plastic!!

not really a site saw more of a precise type machine.

poss go for a dew for spares and the abuse they get on site.

As an all rounder i`d go with the makita,it seems to be the best of the bunch in a lot of areas. I dont know about over there, but here in Aus makita has some of the best parts avaiability going, every hardware shop stocks brushes and a lot of other parts for them.

Thanks, it's certainly the cheapest and I have a lot of faith in the brand.
Do you know if the side tables come off to make the unit a lot smaller. It's listed at 38kg, more than 10 kg heavier than the other two and I can't see where the extra weight is??

Have a look on you tube, for a review on the Makita, it might give you a bit more info, I know there is one as I was looking to buy one myself, sorry I don't have the link but if you put saw name and number in it should find it.
Seem to think it got some good reviews when I was looking.

80mm for a saw that size is a big ask. Personally I'd go with the Makita, although I feel their gear has done to the dogs in resent yrs. I wouldn't touch the Dewalt with a stick.

I've used most makes in my time, Elektra Beckum as Pete says is the daddy.

For what it's worth I have a Clarke table saw as a site saw cheap and won't make me cry if it goes nicked or something falls on it: it's cut a lot of timber like yourself 1/4"ply to plank. A good blade makes a world of difference.


What I do find is the fence is the let down on all of these machines, never strong enough

Elektra Beckum is Metabos old name, you won't beat them on quality but they are among the dearest. Table saws are all similar with not a lot to go wrong and as Shox says the blade will make most difference. Get the Clarke and just use it, my neighbour uses one to cut firewood and it does the job for him.

I have used the bigger Makita (2704) a lot at work, the fence was never perfect and the tilt wheel had plastic teeth which were knackered (the designer wants shot). It came to us second hand tho so who know's what life it had previously.

I like the sturdy look of the Dewalt and Bosch. Both my chop saw and cordless are Dewalt and never had a problem.

I pass a Machine Mart in Edinburgh so I could check out the Clark.

Goint to pull the trigger on the Bosch tomorrow and hopefully get a good deal with their cross laser level in with the lot.

I'll let you know.

I did have a look at the clark but no way could I throw good money at it, poor looking quality but then you get what you pay for.

I've a 6way laser. Should have been 450quid. Great bit of kit, especially doing stud walls. But the slightest bit of strong day lite and you struggle to see the line. I thought you could use any reciever with a head unit. Not the case. So makesure it's what you need

I've been using a Dewalt dw087 for a couple of years. It's a replacement for that but has the added bonus of a pendulum lock. Cross laser is all I need, don't know what I did without one!

Same here. One of the axis stopped working awhile back, a mate used some wire out of a headphone lead, to fix a broken wire from the chassis to the pendulum, thankfully
