Hello,

I'm struggling with 3 sheared off glow plugs on a 3litre diesel. Anyone know of a mobile glow plug removal guy in Lancashire?

They need to be drilled out, and have the hole tapped. Theres then having to use a hoover to remove the drill shrapnel from the cylinders.

Give a few of these a call. Its not a Mitsubishi is it? or Mercedes?

It's a 2002 530d with M57 engine. Have tried drilling and tapping a left hand M7 thread in to the outer glow plug casing and then use a M7 high tensile bolt (left hand) with heat applied to the head to get them out. All that happened is the high tensile bolt sheared off in the glow plug casing!

Oh dear... its not the rearwards most glow plugs that have snapped have they?

I work in a garage and I see a lot of things like this, What happens in these rear wheel drive set ups is the front 2 or 3 cylinders are getting a good amount of airflow just coming off the radiator to cool them down, whilst the rear 3 cylinders have a restricted amount of airflow meaning the plugs AND injectors kind of burn themselves into the head.

Plus I used to own an old '88 volvo 740 with a rear wheel drive setup, and it had these exact same problem, except they didn't snap, i juiced up the plugs with WD40, left it over night, put some more on in the morning, drove it around for an hour, come back and they came out pretty easy.

The garage I work in do a recovery service, for £40-60, but were based in Salford, so Its a fair few more miles away than we would normally recover vehicles.

I called extractengineering, really helpful guy. Think I'll end up having to drill them out. The bottom of the glow plug body is tapered and fits tight with the cylinder head, so swarf shouldn't (I hope) get in to the chamber.

Just to be safe about the swarf removal, get a hoover and grab yourself a 12 inch or so length of hose pipe/what ever will fit in those glow plug holes, and tape it onto the end of the hoover pipe nozzle. In turn stick the hose pipe into each glow plug hole and switch hoover on and have somebody crank the car over a few times to allow the compression to blow out any possible swarf out of the cylinders.

Just be sure to remove all glow plugs as you dont want three cylinders fire up and leave the other 3 chugging. Wear protective sleeves, gloves and eye protection....A lot of high pressure air/diesel will be ejected from those holes... and can easily do you an injury. If you can't see what you are drilling, use a small mirror to help! Good luck!

Any idea what extract engineering would charge for snapped off glow plug removal ?
got a discovery 1 with one snapped off by previous owner , am current rebuilding the engine .
bearing in mind you can buy replacement head with valves for £275 +vat (ok its britpart but had good reports on that particular item !)

My mates got that head in his disco seems alright so far - been in nearly a year used as his day vehicle

cheers stuvy , the MOD use that particular head in there rebuilt engines so must be ok im guessing . i see plenty of 300 tdi engines waiting to be re conned in a factory i visit regularly (caterpillar remaunfacturing) , just a shame i couldnt smuggle a finished unit past security .

I always found nipping the spark plugs up (tightening) before trying to remove them helped them out without seizing into the head, also wouldn't turn over the engine with possible swarf in the cylinders, hoover out without turning the engine over first.

Presume you mean the BMW M57 engines and not the Land Rover TDis?

About a grand seems to be the asking price they are a corking engine though.

Just gone past 165000 miles on my 530d and it's running very sweet, no excessive smoke and no untoward noises. Noisiest part of the car is the underfloor electric fuel pump.

i checked the beemer one first, luckily i was sitting down as i ebayed it.....

then i was still just as taken a back with the LR ones! My mate got his 200tdi disco for £400 then stuck the engine in his series3 and sold the rest including the shell and chassis for £750

No it’s 10 years plus since this post,but is there any chance your work is still in Salford who remove glow plugs
