Is the earth connection similar to a motor brush? What makes the connection against the plate? Presumably it is a consumable part?

It doesn't look to be carbon, it has a bit of a brass/bronze colour to it.
Possibly it is moulded out of a mixture of carbon/brass.
It is spring loaded inside the threaded brass tube and just presses against the back of the table.
I got it from Robotstar5 who reckoned they last for years. If it ever gets to the point where it is worn down i could always replace the block on the end with a bit of copper or something.

We have 4 on each manipulator on one of the machines at work. Indexes about once a minute, 20 hours a day, 5 days a week for the last 5 years, only changed one so far

You have to be careful with your choice, some machines don't go slow enough to use with TIG.

A few drive components turned up the other day so did a little bit more.
Cutting a 6mm keyway in the table shaft
Cutting a 4mm keyway in the motor shaft.
This is the second attempt as the collet holder came up against the shaft housing first time round when the motor was the other way up.
So the shaft has 1 1/2 keyways
Taper lock timing pulleys (same number of teeth on each) and belt fitted.
The hammer handle is putting a bit of tension on the belt so i could sort out an adjuster.
Adjuster fitted.
With everything now fitted it's all a bit more balanced around the pivot.
Before when moving the table from vertical to horizontal it had a tendancy to drop down and might have caught my fingers.
Behind the table shaft pulley there is a spacer tube that puts tension on the bearings. So the nut on the end of the shaft is tightened to push on the tube...when it seems about right i tighten up the taper lock.
All the mechanical bits done.
Taken apart for a bit of undercoat...i think it'll probably stay this colour.
Just the electrics to do now.

Rapid welding have a good selection. The TD1000p is decent and the Jancy ones look ok. You'll have to find a job you can price one in on Paul...

Finally got it all sorted this afternoon.
I made up a bit of an aluminium enclosure.
The wiring was surprisingly straight forward and all worked ok.
Speed control on the left.
Counter clockwise / off / clockwise switch on the right. It's working the wrong way round in relation to the lettering at the moment so just need to sort that.
Wired it all up with some SY cable i had left from another job.
Flat out it does around 2 rpm and it looks like it will be ok for mig but will try it out tomorrow.
Dead slow....i got bored waiting so didnt see how many minutes it would take to do 1 rev.
Could be handy for stirring tins of paint.
The last two pics are just where i was sitting down watching things go round and round.
I'll make up arm rests and fixtures as and when they are needed.
