Shear Stud Welding

Does anyone know of anywhere that does stud welding in the south Yorkshire area? I've got 4 small fabs that require approx 64 19mm studs welding to them.

Can you not just mig them on? Look up a company called 'Shearstud'. They will supply them at any length you need.

To get the proper shear stud boys out is a £1,000 minimum day rate and they are rough.

I thought about mig welding them but apparently the need to be done the "proper" way. I found a place in Nottingham and one in scunny, they seem to be the closest.

I know what you mean about them being a bit rough, I used to make a lot of bridges and have seen them in action!

I've been through this with a couple of steelwork designers before. Migging them on (assuming a sound weld of course) is actually better than the 'proper way' Ever seen them perform a 'bend test' after welding them on? Belt them over to 45 degrees and if they dont snap off then they are classed as ok!

A proper studweld using resistance welding will tear a slug from the parent material.

We Mig them on, But only ever do the odd few hundred once in a blue moon. The designers are always happy with it.

Proper stud welding is a fast process, 64, barely an hours work including getting the gear out.

I've had the same arguments, but the customer wants it doing in a accordance with xyz weld procedures. Got one quote back today and its basically doubled the price of the job, but if they'er willing to pay for it so be it

I always thought that stud welding was a form of spot welding: The stud has a "pimple" and then its flash/spot welded to the parent with a high burst of current over the right time!.

The tricky bit is deifining current/time !!

So as a one off could not a big spot welder be configured to stud weld?
