Right then chaps...

General workshop oil - for oiling of anything that moves in general (locks, hinges, vices) for dropping on steel before drilling and everything else tht occasionlly needs a drop of lubericasheun et cetera.

At the moment i tend to use 3 in 1 but it comes in such little bottles im forever running out. I reckon i must be able to buy something in bigger quantities which would also work out cheaper.

Im thinking something like mini gear/motor oil - a heavyish car oil.

What do you reckon?

I'm using 20/50 engine oil simply because I've found loads of it whilst having a clearout.

I think 3-in-1 is the same as Shell Tellus.

I've got an account with Morris Oils, Normally buy a few 20lt drums of engine oil for my car and sometimes use a few pints from the drum.

Morris do a great alternative to wd40, Its green and stinks but it don't half work and a quarter of the price, Forgot what it was called now, i guess it'll come back to me

I use gun oil for small part lubrication etc. For drilling I use WD40 or cutting oil.

I use wd40 on ally - seems thin for steel although thats more of a "seems to me" than based on any science...

if your drilling or sawing steel a proper cutting compound is best parafin for ally and whatever motor oil thats left or free for general oiling and a gallon of wd 40 for everything else

For thin steel or small holes WD40 seems to work fine, but larger stuff I use proper cutting oil. Gun oil as general purpose lubricant is great stuff, it migrates well, protects well against moisture and is long lasting. Larger cans can be obtained. For vices I use REALLY heavy gear oil or semi-fluid grease.

There's an alternative to wd40 called GT85 which friends of mine swear by, but what oil do you put in a squirty can for things like lathe gears?

GT85 is good, I've used that to. Was introduced to it at a mates racing workshop.

Thanks for,the link was looking up the Landy I think the 6000miles engine oil change is bit optermostic it would have all run out by then!

Morris is good stuff. I've been using there engine and transmission oils for years, excellent quality and very well priced. Also use their compressor oil.

Morris, i use their water soluble oil for lathes and mills.

Cheap oil that will work all round is hydraulic 32 or the anti wear AWD32, gone up a bit now approx £17 5 ltrs delivered from Smith and Allen

My son gets the GT85 at trade price, stinks and not as good as WD40. Its ok for keeping rust off. Theres duck oil too.

I use slideway oil for everything, well I bought a big can of it. If I can think of a reason not to use slideway oil[the can isn't close?] , then synthetic silokolene and again I bought a lot of it. WD 40, your joking right? silkolene/slideway oil and a large glug of basecoat thinners, you guessed it I bought a lot of it.
