so im just wondering if anyone out ther has a ford transit not a new one but one about 10 years old as m looking to get one and i have not got a big budget i need to know what kind of MPG they get and what should look for when buying

im not sure if this is in the rght section of the form im im wrong plz move

Don't know which body type you're going for but a mate has a LWB high top, diesel 52 plate which has stellar mileage on it. He bought it 3rd hand with about 100K on it. Within the first 30k of his ownership the box and diff needed a rebuild but that could have been previous abuse. Since then it's only needed routine servicing, new front wheel bearings, track rod ends, rear springs because one broke but it's driven with a perpetually heavy load, rear shocks and bits and bobs. I've done a few long journey's in it and it does about 25 MPG with careful driving. I thinks it's the 2.5 TD. So I reckon not bad really. Good enough for him to keep and recently have fully re-painted and liveried up in his race team colours.

Iv got an old shape one, get about 30-35mpg out of it.
Look for rust on the wheel arches and behind the rear arches and under rear bumper. That's where mine was rusty...

Are you looking at a 2 litre or a 2.4?

If you're looking for reliability don't go for the tdci, which shouldn't be if your going about 8-9 years old plus.

good van, good on fuel for what there doing economy can be anything between 20 - 35 mpg depending how hard your driveing it what sort of roads ypur going down and how much weight its carrying. pump selonoids fail sometimes makeing them crap at starting and slow

170K its had a clutch, 1 injection advance selonoid in the pump, set of balljoints, pair of rear light assemblys and meany sets of pads shoes drums disks tyers.

I've been running old transits for the last ten years or so - pay about 500 quid for one with 10 to 12 month's MOT, budget for another 500 to keep it running (or pass MOT if there's anything left in the kitty).
Take for MOT, then work out whether to scrap or fix.

It's ALWAYS rust that kills them.
Chassis, sills, and wheel arches.
Everything else is cheap and easy to fix,
and the engines (I go for 2.5 non-turbo "banana manifold") last forever.

The main problem with the 2.5 n/t is that max speed is about 60, and acceleration is erm...

But I can get 30-40mpg out of it (no point in driving with heavy feet, cos it makes no difference).

Shame Fords didn't build their vans with Bolt on Panels, That would be such an easy fix

Borrowed a LWB high top T350 three years ago, flat out to Swaffham and back 31/32mpg.
Just a light 125 bike in on way back.

But then they'd never sell a new one!

I reckon a n/a 2.5 transit engine is good for 500K miles.
If it wasn't for the rust, they'd probably last someone their full working life.

I'd agree the 2.5 N/A is a great engine , they rust everywhere,rear doors ,arches and steps are common , mechanically the diff seems to let go before the engine.
Mines on a V reg ,electric windows,central locking 0-60mph eventually

replacement diff (actually full back axle)
costs about 50 quid round here.
Takes about an hour to change over the diff,
then the rest of the axle can be scrapped for about 15 quid.

Mines on a V reg ,electric windows,central locking 0-60mph eventually

Downhill only tho.

I take it you mean the Banana engine? The best diesel ford ever did, always start briliantly and no DPF or DMF to go, slow but plods on forever and easy to turbocharge!
