Respect your welders: The profession has seen pay rise by 22.2 per cent in the past six years

A new study has revealed the pay rise winners and losers across the UK… and surprisingly the prize for biggest pay rise was not scooped by chief executives.
Metal welders have seen their pay rise by 22.2 per cent in the last six years - double the national average.

Which is good news for welders and like i've been saying all the time they need to get paid what they are worth. Welding is a Skilled profession, Not just something anyone can do, so its great that welding rates are going up and welders are getting some decent money again. ;D

There's Loads on welding work out there at the moment and good money to be made if your willing to put some effort.

I doubt there are many welders who have had much of a pay rise the last few years.

I used to do it for a living, I was fed up of working year on year without a decent pay rise, also looking over my shoulder every time things went slack.

I left the private sector completely, the firm went bust not long after.

There seems to be two types of work in welding - they very well paid which will only last a short time, and the more "secure" jobs, some of which offer pay which frankly is insulting to a skilled person.

I do it as a hobby now, I still enjoy it though.

I have to agree, most of the companies round here are paying little more than they were ten years ago, there may be a bit of a rate increase for those working in short term construction projects, but the jobbing fab shops that have survived have either been de skilled, or filled with cheap imported labour driving rates down not up.

I would guess it depends if you fork PAYE or your self employed, A few years back i was on PAYE for 9 months and the wages were rubbish, just barely affordable, Now i'm working for myself i'm seeing that there are jobs out there for good money some weeks i'm earning 3 times what i was on paye. so its good for me. However i do need to travel 40 miles each way, which i don't mind if i'm getting decent money.

I think as well welders pay is slowly creeping up, Since the bulk of the east europeans have gone home I've seen the basic rate at paye level slowly creep up, I don't think employers are paying the rates the east europeans would work at anymore, They know if they want to employ British workers they need to pay a decent rate.

Remember Welding and Fabricating is a skilled trade, you should earn what your worth. if companies are paying £8.50 an hour for a welder/fab, then thats insulting

Thats disgusting, I know of two welders that went to Gatwick to work making sandwiches for the shops on £9.20 an hour and that was a few years back too

You can't really say that as there are welding jobs in Cornwall which pay crap money, I guess where the need arises you will find the work, In scotland they have decent pay with all the offshore welding work. Up north as well you will find the bulk of the UKs engineering firms too

I lot of companies around the northwest are only offering pittance for skilled welders, ranging from only £7-9.5ph. Occasionally you may find a job paying £12.50 but not often. I am self employed but offer contract work to companies to fill in the days I'm not so busy. I turned a job down welding stainless tanker trailers because they only offered £10.50 ph for coded welders!!! I was earning that 5years ago.

Lol, I get £8 ph! In mid wales. Better than being on the dole though!
