Advice for lifting 200kg top plate for bench

I have built a work bench that is designed to take a 1.5m x 1m top plate of 15mm mild steel. This weight will be around 175kg. Just wondering if anyone's got any experience and advice on how to unload it.

It will be loaded onto the back of my little Suzuki pick up by forklift but it's once I get it home that is the problem. The plate needs to be unloaded then lifted on end to go through a standard garden gate and then lifted onto the bench. Distance is around 50metres.

Any advice appreciated.

engine crane to lift it off or 4 or 5 mates, then make up a small trolley to roll it down the garden

not that i have but if you look in the back of supermarkets diy centers you can find little roller trolleys that would suit your needs perfectly

Few mates would be my choice. I did mine 300kg out of trailer with engine crane, turned it over then bolted to wall with engine crane and a mate (who never let's me forget)

At that size you should be able to slide it down planks .
Ease up the back edge where it sits onn the truck tub , slip in a cross bearer add scafflod planks , screw them on the bearer , anchor bearer to the tub . lever the sheet onto the planks and slide it off the truck , then tip it on to one edge then roll it edge over edge to where you want it and slide it back up secured planks on to the bench .

If you don't fancy the end over end routine then cut a half dozen roller tubes and use then to move the major distance if the ground is solid

Thanks for advice. I am thinking of making a little trolley that g clamps directly to the plate to wheel it in.

We (as in me and the guys at work!) moved a 3/4 tonne lead-lined sliding door on one edge using off-cuts of scaffold pipe as rollers, two of us each side to keep it upright and one pushing.
The scariest bit was getting it betwen all the lathes and mills in the client's machine shop en route to their new x-ray bay!
H&S must have thrown a sickie that day

I think that the easiest way would be to get another 3-4 friends, put a series of pieces of wood across the path every so often so you can put it down without loosing your fingers and just carry it to where you need it to go with the sheet standing on edge. ( preferably you can use a strong rope looped under the bottom edge to carry it). 175kg isn't all that much and between 4 people would be about 44kg each which is quite managable.

I did a 3mt x 1.2m x 25mm (750kg) sheet once on my own, but didn't have all that far to move it, but did require pieces of steel pipe under the sheet to get it to roll off the trailer, once the back edge is sitting on the ground, jack up the other end a bit and put steel or timber stands near the trailer end to support it and then remove the tailer/ute. Bit of an effort but doable. If it is the back of a ute, then the angle will be much more accute and you risk the stands kicking out when you let the jack down, so you will need to put some stands under the back edge so it sits higher off the ground and then again at the edge closest to the ute.

You will most likely need to put a piece of angle steel across at the back near the ute tray and clamp it down strongly with decent "G" clamps to stop the jack from sliding away as you raise it because of the angle of the plate.

Much, much simpler with 3-4 mates. just my 2 cents worth.

I'd go with 3 mates, everyone grab a corner and heave away.

just make up 2 rope strops loop underneath and 4 blokes just carry it in. thats all u use carrying large plate glass for shop fronts

Thanks for all the advice. Due the 15mm plate being a little more expensive that I thought I went for 12mm instead. This meant the big piece was only 150kg. Which turned out quite easy to manage between 3 of use. Slide it off the back of my suzuki carry pick up and had some real crappy casters g clamped to the plate. Not sure of the castors will see another day but certainly did the job.

It will do. It could be held on one, between the two of them they will hold 500kg. Once the table top is bolted down, I will put the gas struts back on. Then you simply vent the gas from a little grub screw until you get the desired pressure.

Going to be adding a catch incase the struts fail, don't want to chop anyones head off.
