Fan Assisted Wood stove - Anyone built one

I need to build a wood burning stove for the workshop, however where it will be sited in the workshop, means I can't fit a tall stack outside. So I was thinking of using a fan out of a condensing boiler to pull/blow the fumes out and away from the gable end horizontally, at about 8' about ground level.

Has anyone seen this done, or have built a similar setup.

Are you intending to vent the stove into the roof space?

I reckon by the time they get up there they will have spread to such an extent that a fan powerful enough to extract them will take all the heat out of the building too.

Also any turbulence in the air will cause the fumes to circulate down to ground level (watch a steam train going slowly, the smoke gets everywhere).

Sounds very dodgy to me.

It's a commercial item, you can buy fans that fit on the top of your chimney for where you've not got enough draw,have a skeg round heating shops/google etc [then make your own from your newly gained info!!]

You could also blow it from the inlet. I have found that relatively short flues work quite well. My first woodstove was tested on the terrace with around 2mt of flue, roared off like a good'n. Then kept us warm with 3mtr of flue.
The key bit is height from the stove to top of flue.The odd curve does not seem to make much difference. ( This is from making around 300 stoves, with several odd instalations)

Never 'sucked' the flue, mainly because of the lack of kit that would survive the idea. Plus, must be something wrong if that is needed.

I've never heard of that term or seen one but I guess you could call it that.

Because is will be positioned under a mono pitched roof that has a window above it, on the wall the roof butts to.

So I want to exit the flue about 8' off the ground through the gable end. My thinking is if it's forced out it will push it further away from the house.

If you used a fan to force air INTO a wood stove it'd be super hot and your exhaust gas would be pretty clean and so could be straight out of the wall like most gas or oil burners.

Actually, thats not a bad idea, I might try that myself.

|Any way.. The title thread made me think of fan assisted circulation of the heat produced by the stove. Which I have made a few. But then realised it was about the draft and flue.

That's what I was looking at doing, the induction type seams like a better solution as I want to make sure it burns very cleanly. It's a saw dust stove, made from two Gas bottles the blue 11kg ones fit inside the red 13kg a treat

If you use a forced draught you need to make sure you have absolutely no leaks anywhere and you'll have to turn off the fan every time you put in fuel or there'll be smoke all over the place. You could do an induced draught on the outlet (can you tell I used to be a boiler fan engineer?) with a venturi doing the sucking, then you wouldn't need to worry about the heat affecting the fan.

Funnily enough I just built a forge from ideas posted here. Using Welsh Coal left by a friend, it was very effective with the forced draft. But smoked with toxic sulfur fumes if the draft was turned off.
Good point about the Y junction and induced draft to preserve the fan.

the same principle as a blast pipe on a steam loco boiler

A power flue is normally used for domestic gas fires that dont have a normal chimney/flue and is vented out behind the fire when on an outside wall or can be run along a wall to the outside wall if under a certain length. If you google it there is loads of info on it.

Do you have a plumbed in compressed air system in the workshop? You could use that to provide the suction using Brightspark's idea, which is an eductor really.
