Trying to get my head round the various welding codes. Am I correct in thinking that the ASME IX is purely an MMA certificate, and does not give any certification for MIG welding. MIG presumably being covered by a different code ?.
There isn't just one code for each type of welding, there are loads! I am coded to BS EN 287 in Mig but only in mild steel and stainless steel (that's because I was tested on mild and stainless). There are also various codes for various positions ie: if you did a test and got coded for a horizontal butt weld then that is all you are coded for. The same if you did a fillet weld. However, the more difficult a test, the more you are covered for. I was tested on 3mm mild tube in the 6g position (a butt weld set at 45 degrees) which covers me for all positions on mild up to 6mm thick. I was also tested in the over head position on 6mm stainless plate. This covers me for all various positions on stainless from 3mm upto 12mm thick.
Hope this clarifys things a bit? Best thing to do is speak with your local welding test centre and explain to them what kind of work your into. They will more than likely know exactly what codes you will need
Many thanks for the input. I get a lot of jibes about the fact that I am not coded to ASME IX unlike my colleague. What does interest me is that his Coding was done on MMA, which I believe means only his welding in MMA is covered. His MIG welding I presume is no more covered than mine, apart from the fact that I did at least get a BS 4872,something ignored by him.
