Hydraulic'd Diesel

Neighbour came round this after to ask if i would look at his car. (im not a mech, im a bodyman with mech knowlege)
He drove his daughters peugeot diesel through a flood and it stopped. I said i would have a look tomorrow but explained how even a teaspoon of water injested etc etc....
Now im assuming it will probably start but not on all four cylinders. Is it worth taking the injectors out and clear any water before i try to restart it or would the damage be already done? i.e can i make it worse by turning her over?

Have a look in the airbox first and see if water has obviously gone past the filter. Some cars have the intake to the airbox arranged so that water is diverted those circumstances but could still stall the engine due to loss of air. Also, most diesels don't have throttle valves so there isn't as much intake vacuum as on a petrol.
If water has got in then there will still be some in 1 or more cylinders waiting to cause more damage, so it will need ejecting with injectors out.

neighbour did this, pug and cit have intake behind bumper so hoover up water

take the glow plugs out (easier than injectors) and spin it on the starter

take the induction side apart as the filter box will have water too

she might be lucky would be worth doing an oil and filter change after its running again

Not on some PSA diesels !! The glow plug at the timing end on the mechanical injection engines is an utter swine to get to !

was lucky with my van it locked up but didnt damage the engine i took the air filter out put it in 1st gear and a few of us pushed it backwards and let the clutch out . the water flew out the intake with a lot of white smoke and some jumpleads it started engine ran fine

If the engine was at high rpm when it sucked up the water then it could have caused bend conrods so remove glow plugs and slowly turn over by hand / spanner before trying the starter.

That's what happened with my Xantia TD. Twice!

At the Land Rover show, off road course, I messed up my little diesel engine (VM 6cylinder 3.6lt in my car 6x6 range rover, I entered a lake too fast, water went in through the intake, after being dragged out backwards the engine would not start it did turn over though, but on stripping down bent conrods all 6,

Nobody could ever say they didn't notice that one was a bit bent.

Btw, isn't the term hydro locked, or is it just a local pronunciation variance?

I don't think there is an accepted, technically specific term. Hydraulic'd is just abbreviated hydraulic locked I think, hydro locked also works.

Sounds fair enough. Must admit, I'd never been totally sure on that point myself.

Quality. Full marks Brightspark. Decided as it wasn't mine and all the pistons were probably at different levels I drove the engine backwards half a dozen revolutions, ran the blow gun through the air intake and up she fired. The village was engulfed in white smoke for a while but 5 minutes later test drive. Thanks all..
