Migs and Mobile Phones

Hi everyone, here's the background.

I'm self employed, mig about 4 hours a day and need my mobile with me for business calls. I normally keep it in my boiler suit breast pocket. No matter what the model, they all seem to fail after about 12 months. I'm not talking about smart phones but basic Nokias etc. A Chistmas present last year was a JCB Tough Phone (there are videos of it on You Tube showing it being thrown into cement mixers, driven over etc). This has now failed with tremendous feedback.

The basic question is "Do Migs destroy mobiles?". I suspect you would need to be an electronics wiz to answer the question fully but I'd love to know if anybody else has had the same experience.

Yup, you'll find the speaker is full of iron filings! If you clean it out you'll find you have sound again.

i stick mine in a sealable plastic bag works perfect whilst in the bag

I also have wrecked 2 mobiles because of the grinding particles, the speakers fill up and the sound becomes very static like to the point that I am unable to understand the conversation. Unfortunately with the 2 Nokia's I was unable to get all the particles out so they are now just sitting in the spare room with all the other older models that were upgraded, not to mention the updated laptops, desktops, printers, cameras ect ect. It's like an electronic graveyard in there.

Last place I worked at, I used to strip and clean out the 2 fabricators phones every few months.

As above, I'd say it's not MIG that kills phones, it's grinding dust.

yepp sure is!

I stick mine(iphone) is a food bag with the press to close top but i also plug in an old pair of computer speakers so i can hear the radio and the added benefit if anyone rings it comes through the speakers so i dont miss calls

The problem with metallic particles have got progressively worse over the last 5 \6 years as we want louder audio, the rare earth magnets are incredibly powerful, we have major problems with 2 way radio speakers as well, full of metal dust within a few weeks even with speaker gausses in front of them, then the darn welding , grinding sparks burning through the gausses & plastic speaker cone, .
Plastic bags are a good idea, even in places you would think had no particles we find speakers full of very fine dust in 6 7 months
