Anyone doing doll house miniatures in 1/12 scale. They are usually at a premium price as well.

That's....insane? Is there some ancient, almost forgotten craft like...cord wrangling or something that must be done in twelfths? I had to zoom in and count because I couldn't believe it!

I prefer working in inches when I have an apprentice to train
I can work in either quite happily, I prefer them when working down to small measurements like 0.0001''

That reminds me of when I went to the States to visit family. She had a joiner in and he was measuring and said to his sidekick,that will be 5 quarters. This really intrigued me and I asked how can you get five quarters,he Said, You can have upto six quarters,it a measure for Lumber". Nuff said I went out for a drink.

I have bought 9 quarter lumber
I do have a 3-sided ruler with 12ths, 8ths, 5ths, 6ths, 10ths etc
Anything metric, I'd have to dig for.
You have a three-sided RULE. We have a RULER, HM the Queen.
I understand 64s, 32s,16, 8s, etc, but 10ths and 12ths, no idea. Decimal inches are something only seen on digital verniers and CAD with decimal inches chosen in preferences.
As for 12ths, ?Why?
?Is 9 quarter, 2 1/4 x (?) ? God only knows.

yes 9/4 is 2.25".
5/4 and 9/4 are standards for rough cut wood. The idea is its 1/4" over a standard size to allow for planing down. Usually only 3 edges are flat; 4th is rough edge of log. It is number of "fourths of an inch".
Hmm, my trailer has 5/4 (1.25") deckboards.
1x6 is actually 3/4x5.5", 5/4 says it is not the dimensional lumber size (2x4 was 2x4" then, 1.75x3.75", then 1.625x3.625 and now 1.5x3.5.) Sizes were changed in 1910, 1928, 1956 and finally in 1961.

I can work in both imperial and metric, but the majority of my work on classic cars is done in imperial ie micrometer, vernier gauges, steel rule etc. I remember learning the 12 times table at school too. The twelfths thing might be a link to the fact that we learned the 12 times table to deal with pounds, shillings and pence so it would seem like a logical division for measuring distances in inches too
