Shipping container as workshop

Neighbour is buying a mini digger and has said I can borrow. My garden already slopes so I'm thinking of digging it out futher so I can part bury a small / 10' shipping container. Obviously condensation would be a problem but plan would be line inside with timber, insulation and plasterboard or similar.
Easy access for Hi-Ab to unload a container. Top of container would be level with the higher ground and maybe have a decking area on top so just the lower door area would be visible.

What do people think ?

If you do it,are you going to put gravel underneath or just grass/soil? Id advise you to make sure air can vent under it,sit it on railway sleepers or something,otherwise they rust really quickly underneath.Id imagine theyd make a great wee workshop once youve lined it,Ive been half looking for one just to use for sandblasting.

Nice idea, although the ceilings are pretty low and a ten foot container is very small. Better than nowt though!

I would definatley paint the outside with bituminous paint where it's going to be below ground level. That size container IS small, but if you got two and fixed them together you'd have a tidy workshop.

This; if you can get a fridge or freezer box it will already be well insulated. they're usually better built as they cost more initially so need to last longer.

Add some soundproofing/insulation to the inside if you ever plan to operate power tools or use a hammer. I spend several days working in a shipping container a few years ago, and it's amazing how just the sound of an electric drill bounces off the sides and gets unbearable after a while!

As others have said - whilst they are pretty weatherproof, they will rot if in contact with soil for any length of time.

err there not.

i visited a site and the toe rags had just three cuts and lifted the piece up like a giant cat flap. The doors arent that secure either as they lop the lugs off and pull the doors to shear the padlock
