what's the worst burn anyone has got from welding.

mines i set the rod on the ground was getting up was using the ground for help forgot myself and put my on the rod. spent the rest of that night with my hand in a bucket of water.

oh and the time i set my jumper on fire.

Laid a bead with stick. Flipped up helmet, hit with slag hammer and huge piece of slag hit my neck and stuck.

Still have a 1/2" white spot a year later

I have had quite a few burns over the years but what I really think is more painful is a scald, like touching a pipe or whatever that you have just brazed or soldered a minute or so previously.

Rushing, about 11pm on a Friday night. Laid down TIG welding wall panels to a tray in the floor, moved, and laid my arm on the weld i had done 10 seconds previously.

Gas cutting bolts out of concrete 27years ago,got the concrete too hot ,it exploded and hot concrete went down my rigger glove,between my thumb and forefinger... I learnt a lesson

Pretty much how I did this, working in a confined space re routing pipework under an effluent plant, leaned straight on the joint I had just welded.

sound sore my uncle got a spark in his boot by the time he got it of it had burnt a hole in his foot

I had a spark down a loose sock when I was let loose OA welding at school, still a mark somewhere on my inside right ankle. Seemed to spit and cackle for eons!

Other one was in the last year, having taken up TIG welding, paused a run, managed to run the end of the filler wire across my torch hand wrist, left a nice fine burn that took a while to go away.

yepp pete certainly wins!!

I was laying under a toyota pick up too lazy to take the exhaust off to weld a tiny patch(5pence size) and burnt through my overalls, t-shirt and into my chest. I certainly taught the neighbours some swear words that day.

recently I was welding up another exhaust for my mates bike and a hot spark fell off the bench and through my boot eyelet through my sock onto the skin, that seriously hurt!!

Im gonna stop welding exhausts

I once got some hot slag down my left boot while arcair burning and it took 3 months to heal. Don't wear nylon socks is the lesson and keep a bucket of water in the bay to stick your foot in, boot and all.

Worst I got was at college when a piece of hot slag went down the front of my doc marten. Normally a hot slag going down is a good thing but not this time - I got a hole in the front of my ankle still now 25yrs later.

Worst burn I ever had from burning I just posted today in the nasty accidents thread.

Had a few but nothing serious..what I want to know though is the answer to the following:

Leather, steel toe capped boots in excellent condition, jeans covering the ankle opening and a hot ..in fact very hot spark between 2 toes..how did the little sod get there?

The event produces a whole new dance craze whilst trying to undo the laces you wish you had not made such a good job of tying in the first place.

I was only a few weeks into my apprenticeship and was welding a galvanised drawbar on a cement pump with the mig. In a rush never ground off the galv and suprise surprise a red hot lump of molton galvanise went straight down the back of my boot. That was a year ago and i still have a serious scar and hole in the heel of my foot. Never want a repeat of that again re

I've had most of the above nothing really horrendous, but a bloke I worked with was welding a frame on a wagon. He finished one bit and put the torch on the cross beam so he could move the ladder but he rested it on the trigger the wire came all the way round burnt through his overalls into his arm and hit his artery, the blood spout was very impressive but real scary.

I was filling a casting machine with alluminum swarf and for some reason it exploded, and sent blobs of molten metal all over ,one blob went down my gauntlet and settled on my wrist, threw the gauntlet off and burnt the fingers on the other hand pulling it off, I also invented some new words that will never make it into a dictionary

Was welding a 4" #120 cs pipe using low hydrogen rods, slag wasent the easiest to come of I gave it a good chap and a bit of roasting slag hit me in the eyeball got stuck and sizzled

We used to have a bench at work (A) frame either side and 6m lenghts of 80x60MM. Favourite one was finish a run with the mig and throw gun over one of the lenghts, the torch would land and then swing toward you resulting in the hot ball on the end of the wire burning it`s way through your overalls and in to your leg. Made you jump abit

Lots of spark bites and slag burns, including eye lids stuck together with a bit of slag. The worst was when I was sitting down and had just started a run, 1.6MM wire spray transfer lots of power. I didn't get my start quite right and the weld pool dribbled off the edge of the plate on to my boot. Unfortunately boot had a small hole. Liquid steel in the boot = a 5inch flame shooting out of the side of my boot and later a skin graft. Its just under my big toe where it meets my foot about 50p size. Could have been worse my foundry boots are quick to get off. It was quite sore though.

I've had a fairly unique one, though it was about 20 years ago. Gas-welding rusty cars in the 80s. It's never good.

I was sitting down on the floor, cross-legged, Buddha-style, welding on a sill. Got a backfire from some crap on the tip or in the weld pool and despite being used to it, I jumped a bit (you always flinch anyway). Somehow I jabbed the red-hot-ended gas-welding rod straight into the front of my thigh, straight to the femur. I felt it grate on the bone. Went in like a hot needle in butter, through my jeans and everything. An instant later I had jerked my hand back in shock and it came out smoothly and just as quickly. In/out, just like that. It didn't bleed at all (instantly cauterised) and left a tiny blue dot, like a micro-bruise. Felt like a minor pulled muscle for a few days.

I've had backfires from vehicle-welding up a nostril a couple of times too. That makes you jump. And I once had one fly off and come arcing round in a curve - I actually watched it out of the corner of my eye - straight into my left earhole with uncanny accuracy.
