Cleaning mating faces with strip and clean pad?

I'm cleaning up a load of transmission and axle parts for the old truck and am merrily degreasing and painting the individual pieces prior to reassembly.

There are quite a few mating faces which will need to be left in bare steel to ensure a good leak free mate with other components. Some of these faces have surface rust and I'd like to clean them up.

I have some of the strip clean pads for the grinder from Weldequip - these would produce a fantastic finish very neatly but I'm concerned that they could be too aggressive for the steel faces.

Am I being overly cautious?

the old way was scrape the mating surfaces clean with the end of a 6inch steel rule then rub any inperfections up by hand with some emery cloth or wet and dry . more controll than using a machine

Yep the discs you mentioned will be fine, I use the same

I use wire brush on angle grinder for these kinda jobs.
