8018-C1 rod- what are they for?

Afternoon all!

When i first started arc welding I bought a 5kg box of lincoln 8013 3.2mm rods for a very small sum. This was before I knew what I was buying. Not being able to find much info on them, could someone please tell me what they are actually for and if they need heating?

as far as i know they dont make a 8013

My bad, Iv actually read the box instead of the poor writing on the rod.

Its an 8018-C1 and called a KRYO 3

There made by Smithweld, who are owned by Lincoln norweld.

They are low hys mainly used for welding components subject to low temperatures, down to -50 or even -60 oC. They can also be used for welding higher strength steels and Weathering Steels (Corten)

But they will also be OK for sticking 2 bits of MS together for a garden gate (providing you have the equipement and skill to do it)

8013 rods are rutile rods and creep redistance, you generally use a short arc with these and if possible heat the rods prior to use.

Generally used for heat proof welds on boiler plate ir where the metal comes into high heat contact

Woah! Didn't mean for argument over a 99p box of rods! I'll give one a whirl when my finger isn't broken in a couple of weeks.

I think Iv confused every one by the title. The 8013 appears to be for higher temp amd 8018 for low temps.

Which 'they'? So far we've had 8013 which was a typo as the OP actually had 8018-C1 which TechnicAl listed uses for. Then we were back on 8013 and maybe 8018 again but with no mention of whether it was still 8018-C1 or some other flavour like 8018-B2...

I've used 8018's for welding Corten. Not a particularly nice rod to use.

Not suprising everyone's getting confused, the first two numbers are just a strength class, the last two position & flux/polarity. There are at least three different 8018 electrodes with different uses... The OP has 8018-C1 (2.25% Ni) which are different to 8018-B2 (CrMo) which are different to 8018-C3 (1% Ni)
