Exhaust pipe welding.

I'm working on trying to finish up the turbo piping for my sc400. Im about confused about the way im supposed to weld this pipe together..

When welding 2 pieces how far apart do you put the 2 pieces? Should they touch?

I've read that you should keep them a little apart not touching but when I do this I get wire inside the pipe where I left the space between the 2 pieces. I tired pushing and pulling...

Any suggestions?

You dont necessarily need a gap. Try it without. Or try a slight chamfer, on each, to form a 'Vee'

Ok thanks, I'll give that a go. It should work fine I think the main problem was I kept getting wire between the 2 pieces, other than that i was getting "ok" welds...

Start the weld from the side at an angle. Then when the bead gets going move torch to vertical. Then weave side-side as needed to grow bead along gap.

I have welded some sloppily-cut pieces that way

Got any pics of ye project? I am doing the same at the moment and I have left no gaps in the pipe just for that reason

How did you prep your pipe? I heard that its best to clean with acetone, sand it down with some sandpaper and then acetone again and wipe it dry.... I bought the pipe from Columbia Mandrel Bend (Racing Solutions)

A few pics of the car/turbo... Its a V8 so I do plan to go twin down the line when I get more money and shoot for 700whp... but for now im gonna run 350-400...

thats a great motor. I bet you wouldnt buy it if you lived here in the uk and had to pay £5 ($10) a gallon though, eh ?

I have a red top optima now for about 5 years, they are spot on. Drained it flat a few times when left the seat heaters on. Now it's on my offroader thats used monthly and it still spins motor over after doing nothing for a month. Even bounced it 120 feet down a hill and it's still spot on!
Thinking about it, it must be closer to 8 years old.

Ah, cheers. It's a red top I'm thinking of getting. It's for my 4x4 which only gets occasional use (not many places to go to here). They're on eBay for £90. Not sure how he manages to do them for 2/3 the price of anyone else, though.

I paid £125 for mine including delivery, they don't seem to have gone up cause Paddocks are selling them for about £115.

Yep Optima yellow top. Its a great battery... definetly worth whatever you pay for it. I got mine from a local autozone for about 150.

This is how our petrol (gasoline ) price is broken down, based on £1 ($2) per litre;

Petrol Fuel Duty - 48.35p

VAT (17.5%) - 14.9p

Refinery Petrol Costs - 31.75p

Forecourt Costs - 3p

Forecourt Profit - 2p

Can't believe you only pay about 85c (42p) per litre, we get ripped off over here

I did not prep the pipe, except for cutting the 'V' in the end of it, I was told that once its all welded up and I am happy with it I should get it dipped in an acid bath for 1 hour to clean out any crap.

I have some Acetone here so I will see if it has any effect on the pipe Have you started to plan the manifold yet, or buid it?

Didnt start the manifold work yet. Im still deciding how best to run the pipes...

Im also waiting for the flanges and a fan pulley.

The hydraulic fan takes up an ungodly amount of space so Im switching it to a smaller electric fan.

Should make access to the turbo a hell of a lot easier as my car is pretty small and engine bay space is very limited
