i have a victorian market barrow & want to preserve the old [poss' original] wheels,there are woodworm holes & one wheel has a small patch of rot yet they're still fairly sound & withstand being towed around the yard with no ill effect.I'd like to dip each wheel in some form of preservative whilst its still resting on the ground & am unsure what chemical to use or do i just use waste engine oil ? suggestions welcome.

you can't buy creosote any more too toxic only substitute

i didnt even realise it was banned shows how long it is since i used it.
just searched out why it was banned and have to say its rediculous
as you will see the rediculous part is in bold and bear in mind the amateur will use it maybe once a year at most for the garden fence or shed
The EU Scientific committee considered a study, which showed that there was some evidence of creosote causing skin cancer in animals, and as such concluded that there remained a risk to amateur users of creosote. This recommendation was based on results from a lifetime's daily skin contact with creosote, so it is highly unlikely that the occasional contact with creosote that an amateur user might have will be of any significant concern. This action has been taken as a precaution.
The conditions of approval, and hence the product label, for all amateur products state that suitable protective clothing such as coveralls, synthetic rubber/PVC gloves and eye protection should be worn. This will also have reduced exposure to the products.

ive just bought 40 ltr of coal tar creosote
look further and it still is available .got the burn marks to prove it

Wickes still do proper creocote, in 1l or 5 or 25l tins £2.99 £11.99 and £28.99 respectively.
I beg to differ. The Wickes offering looks the same and smells similar but is creosote substitute. It works but does wash off after a year or two outside. I've done my barn with it as it was easily available, but I can buy the proper stuff from my local agricultural supplier.

u must be joking its ilegal to sell it to the public or even have it on your property and the last stuff to sell was substitute and that was crap the cheapest i can get proper coal tar creosote is 35 quid for 20 l and thats cheap
