Hi all,

Been a while and I have not finished it yet I have recently got an ARC 140amp welder and I am now wondering which would be better to finish it off?
The Mig I use is a Clarke 130TE, also I am considering converting the ARC welder into a TIG for steels etc...
I have never Arc welded or Tig welded but I would get loads of practice in before starting the job.
Just wondering what other people would use. (The pipe is 3.5mm Walled)

So you think Mig instead of Arc too?

With the thickness of the steel mig will be quicker, arc you will have to get the slag off if you need to go over again.

Only arc it if you're really good!
Otherwise mig.
Tig is easier IMO, than arc, on small stuff. Arc will give good pen, but has more chance of blowing through or slag inclusion, and you don't want repairs on that job. Got to be right first time really.

If you're doing mig, which would be easiest, just make sure you do good stops and starts - no cold laps, or you'll get gas leakage. Work out your weld order to always stop over a previous weld, minimise cold starts over previous weld.

TBH doing it with mig will be a piece of pi55, as long as you do the above. Set your mig for the highest power that won't blow through.

Hat`s off to you on that lil project. Had been planning to do one for my six cylinder Patrol. My nephew is in Oz and he can buy one there for 480 Aus $. It is a cast iron log type. I`m hoping he may be able to put in rucksack and onto plane maybe. Subjective question: Does anyone think it justifies the 200 odd quid making one for a six cylinder diesel with el pipe?

Where's the fun in buying one Shouldnt cost that much to make it out of buttweld pipe, only problem I am having at the moment is where to get the flange made.

Just wondering if anyone can help me out? I had a quote to get my flange made from 10mm mild steel but it was something like £118 to get cut which I am not willing to pay.

I have attached the image below of what needs doing and I dont think that it should cost anywhere near that to be made. So if anyone can recommend anywhere pref in the NW or even what is a reasonable price please let me know as this part is needed to finish the job properly

Yeah one of the guys on the forum with a plasma maybe. Also anyone who can use a gas axe. If I ever do one I have a 40amp cutter. It may do 10mm if you cut from both sides.

How were they going to cut it? £118 does seem quite high but you're talking about a one-off which is always quite expensive, if you wanted say, 10 or 20 the cost would come right down. The problem you've got is avoiding distortion, you'll be taking away a lot of the strength when it's cut and you want it to be as flat as possible after. Flame cutting it would probably make a right mess of it, plasma might also affect it as well. Might be worth getting the holes punched or broached then maybe use a jigsaw or vertical bandsaw to cut the rest out.

They said they would digitise the gasket, then Lazer cut it. You are probably right Wozzaaah, I might buy a bench drill for the holes and just take my time with them, the rest I will use a mixture of jigsaw and angle grinder.

Although I have seen single flanges which are almost the perfect size for the job which might do the trick, then I could maybe Fab up a support bracket for it

You'll find a lot of that cost is in the setting up of the machine, for CNC stuff like that I would expect they charge at least £40+vat per hour. Once the program is stored it's only a case of putting in the blanks, not viable for one-offs unless you could 'have a chat' with one of the guys and see if he'd do it after hours It would definitely be easier to use 4 seperate flanges. You could make them yourself and wouldn't have to worry about distortion then. A bench drill would be a very good investment for you, buy one and you'll wonder how you ever did without one.

I have found a very nice American company that will cut the flange on a CNC mill for $50 plus postage, so its getting sent tomorrow
