Dewalt 18V Li-Ion Tools

Anyone got any opinions on Dewalt 18V Li-Ion tools? I like the looks of this for general work around the shop. I'd mainly be drilling steel no more than 4MM and a bit of work with step drills and wire brushes.

I only ask as we've already toasted two of these Milwaukee drills and I'd rather not carry on the process of returning equipment for repair every 3 weeks.

I used dewalt a lot when I was contracting and they never let me down. Dewalt was slow on battery development but have recently caught up and I now have a li ion battery to replace bust nicad's and found them decent. However for that money you can get bigger makita or Bosch

Batteries are too small in my book, 2x1.5amp hour would not last long.
Of course they are physically small but I prefer a bigger charge.
My four year old Dewalt has 3.00amp hour batteries but oh poor old me they are only NiMh

depends on how hard u cane them .the dewalt has 35nm torque and the milwaukee has 51 nm torque. both drills are suposed to be good but are both overpriced / why use rechargeables when your in a shop with power and u can use heavy duty drills rather than overload the battery operated ones

battery is a little smaller,but would do a fair few 4mm holes

That's what I currently use. Even survived a quick swim in a river after dropping three meters off a roof

The low capacity of the batteries isn't a huge concern as I'll be in the shop any way and I could always buy bigger ones.

why use rechargeables when your in a shop with power and u can use heavy duty drills rather than overload the battery operated ones

Mainly because when climbing inside and under cars to drill out spot welds and such cordless is much easier to wield. Anything thick is done on a bench with a 240V drill but on the cars where I'm rarely drilling thicker than 1.2MM I need to the slow speed of a cordless.

I've been using one of these Makita drills with higher cap batteries but I just lacks a bit of grunt hence thing about going 18V. I found someone with the same Dewalt drills but factory recons for not much more than a new 12V Makita so thought it might be a good chance to upgrade.

We use a lot of DeWalt at work, the drills have even survived production use of nigh on 8 hours continuous use 5 days a week where previous Hitachi & Bosch have burnt out after a few weeks use.
They usually go "missing" rather than breaking, In the last year I've replaced 2 sets of brushes and one trigger out of 8 drills (and replaced 4 "lost" ones )

Price the batteries first!

I've had one for a few years and despite trying to (3" holesaws in 1/2" plate/going nuts with wire brushes) i've so far failed to kill one battery before the other has finished charging. The only way it could be better imo is if it had a proper 3spd gearbox like some of the (a lot more expensive) DeWalts and Makitas.


* one to watch for as many (most?) of 'em tend to fit a cheaper chuck with smaller batteries. It's an all metal Jacobs 500/5000 series with the Hitachi i linked to. The Dewalt in the first link looks to have a cheaper chuck than the all metal single sleeve Rohm that's fitted to their more expensive combi drills

And the batteries are quite cheap which is really rare.

Check out the AEG 18v 3ah Li-on.

Loads on the bay for less than £100 (got mine with two bats for £70 inc del but they spotted it was to cheap & put them up).

Has loads of power & goes on & on.
