I got three 1 metre SDS bits for a tenner from Aldi. I used them to drill a lot of holes through limestone walls 60 and 80 cm thick. I thought they'd drill a few holes each and be knackered but they're as good as new.
The problem is you've got to wait for Aldi to have the offer on. If there's an Aldi close, it's worth haviing a look just in case they have any left. As I recall, they were selling SDS drills for £30 at the same time. Maybe not the best quality, but you can get a lot done with an SDS drill in a couple of minutes. Hire charges soon mount up.
To use a 1 metre bit you have to drill a good deep start, they're much too awkward to use without it, so it's not just a matter of having an SDS drill and 1 meter bit.
I wouldn't muck about trying to use an SDS bit, especially a 1metre one, in a normal hammer drill, although I've seen it done.
One thing to be aware of with SDS drills is that if you drill straight through a wall, the hole tends to be very messy where it exits. The powerful hammer action knocks a shallow chip out as it exits.
