A good solution, just make sure your wiring can carry the extra current or fit relays etc.

Best to run them via a relay. As the wiring will be old and shot.

Indeed - if your dipped beam looks much brighter than the average car (even ones with HID headlights), then you're asking for trouble.

But main beam you only have on when there's no other road user in sight, and the regulations don't actually specify a maximum power. So fitting auxiliary driving lights wired to main beam is the correct way to go.
