Mine was a five speed Falcon racer, followed by a BSA Tour de France 10sp.

the first thing that came to my mind after seeing that bicycle is the 1950s Birdcage Maserati, which had a chassis built of small diameter steel tubing.

£6,500 for a bike and you have to power it yourself ! Nuts to that , you can buy a triumph brand new from hinkley for that sort of money and it'll have a 675cc engine in it.

I'm of the same opinion, I just don't see how a bicycle can cost more than a large motorcycle, even accounting for the handwork involved.

erm sugar i err, well i used to work in a cycle shop and was a sponsored rider for the shop. I once bought a bike for £2500 and, well you know did a few jumps and cracked the frame luckily the bike went back under warranty and i got a full refund

Sort of. My first MTB was a Proflex 956 it cost about 950quid in 1989. In 1991 I did a race and saw a Boulder Defiant. The UK importers (Sshockwave) wanted £2440 for frame and forks. I bought one from Bike Pro in the states, at the time the USD to GBP was over 2.03. So it only cost me around 1200quid.

A few laters later circa 93' I needed a new shock for it (Boulder were the first full suspension bike to use Spring/Oil) I called Boulder directly as Ssockwave had stopped importing the frames. I got talking to Rich Williams (Mr Boulder) and we agreed that I would start to import his frames, on a custom order basis. I imported his frames upto 2001ish

His Frames were made from either 4130, 7005, or Ti. The most expensive been a Ti defaint. I can't remember the frame cost but a full bike was around £4800 and up.

A mate of mine still has his Ti, and I'm still in contact with a few of the other customers. While I didn't sell many frames I can fully understand the work that went into them.

You also have to remember X factor (no not that one) While a product might cost pennys to produce does not mean it has to be sold for pennys as in Oakley Sunglases. And while a Molton or a Boulder frame doesn't cost thousands to produce, the target customer base is willing to pay to own such a work of art. Because that is what it is a work of art.

My mate who owns the Ti Defiant was told when he bought it ('95ish) that if he was to ever sell it I was to have first shout. If I ever do buy it back it will be stripped and the frame hung on a wall. As Art!

The green bike is my 1st Defiant still owned by a close friend the yellow Starship LT is owned by myself.

Nice as this sort of stuff is it does not constitute art. The generally accepted definition of art is an object that serves no other purpose than the aesthetic display of an idea. So, for example, a bicycle is not art but the display of a bicycle frame with no other components could possibly be.
The interest I have in the aesthetic appeal of many mechanical things is intense but they cannot be art by virtue of just being superbly engineered as they were designed and made with a specific purpose of function.
Art conveys an idea or philosophy to the viewer, it has no other purpose and cannot be used for a practical purpose.
Why do I feel as though I've just opened a can of worms ?!

Well they go as high as £20k. But also as low as £900. You don't have to buy the expensive one.

At least as it's a push bike there's no road tax, no insurance, no MOT, no fuel, and you can claim 20p a mile off the taxman.
Sounds like a bargain!
