insulating a single brick house wall inside

weve got a small section in our kitchen thats single thickness wall ..it causes condensation in the winter with the cooking steam etc

anyone able to reccomend what to do with the minimum thickness to work?

google seems to suggest i can dot n dab some insulated board on?

Yes I did exactly the same but with just normal everyday plasterboard and it cured it.

You are really suppose to have an air break or insulation between the wall and board but we needed it to have minimum intrusion into an already small room.

Ideally you need to insulate it and put a vapour barrier in if possible, putting a layer of plasterboard on top will just hide the condensation between the board and the wall causing problems in years to come as it'll rot from the inside out. You can get foam insulation (celotex, kingspan etc) from 25mm thickness upwards, add that to 12mm for plasterboard you don't have to lose a lot of room space.

I pulled some plasterboard off a single brick wall in my last house and the back was covered in thick black mold...

I did not plaster except for the tapered joints, I then wall papered and all this was done about 15 years ago.

The original wall used to have black mould and on really bad days you could wipe your hand and it would come away wet.

I did though wash the wall down first with a good quality mould killer/cleaner before applying the plasterboard.

Another good idea is to apply some sort of black bitumen sealer to the wall before you plasterboard it, That should help make some sort of barrier

If it's single brick, the chances are its not all condensation but damp from outside too. Is there a visable damp proof course? Does anything (render, cement or such) bridge the DPC? I'm just in the process of attempting to stop the same problem on a small extension on our house. Not ideal but the old render went to the ground. Knocked that off, made the DPC visable, bell cast bead fixed above DPC, treated with SBR then 2 coat render with waterproofer. When I get round to inside I'll again treat with SBR, sand/cement scratch then dry line with standard boards.

originaly the kitchen was smaller with a coal shed effort in the corner of the house , its just that 3 foot thats single brick and gets cold

im confident its not damp in the wall...just condensation from cooking going onto the very cold wall ...it does have a damp corse

well if I was doing it:- (bear in mind i do this for a living)

paint on bitumen membrane on the inside face, 3 coats, thick

50x25 (38x19 will do)treated battens screwed to the wall at 400/600 centers and around openings

at least 25mm celotex/kingspan/quintherm etc over battens, 50 is better

ideally foil backed or moisture resistant plasterboard ( a little ott but....) screwed to battens

skim... its worth it, if you have a plasterer there is should be less than £200...depending on exactly what he has to do....

Well I'd ask a brickie. I'm sure he'd say water penetration due to no cavity. If you put all the above on the wall, you will lose close on a minimum 6 inch off a 3foot room? But if it is condensation, all that wouldn't make much difference without heat in there. No way you could plumb a rad in there?
Glad I don't do it for a living anymore.

line the wall with visqueen [dpc] and screw 2x2inch battens to the wall .insulate with 2 inch kingspan between the battens and board with 1half inch plasterboard and fit a wall fan while your at it u will only loose 2and a half inch

Timber batten with treated battens with a moisture barrier between them and the wall, then sprayfoam the brickwork with PU foam (you can get big dispensers), then plasterboard.

I wouldn't use barrier on that though. On a brick exterior wall you'd want it or the wood would be permanently wet.

We did our bedroom a couple of years ago with polysterene backed boards and the mould has still come back and our walls are over 2' thick!! Putting a good fan in will do the world of good. Have a read of this on a damp proofing website about condensation
