newbie not a clue about welding

hi i need to learn a little bit about welding as i have a little on the side hobby of buying cars repairing them then selling them on. so as you might no some exhausts need a lot of welding

soo first off i have looked online for a welder obviously i dont want to spend loads on a welder as im only 19 and tbh wont use it that much but its handy to have it there. so i am looking at this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390429483828

would that be ok for welding exhausts basically thats all i will use it for.

next question which Electrodes do i use for welding exhausts ?

its a mig u require not a stick welder the amps wont go down nowhere near for thin metal and even welding exhausts up is hardly feasable unless it just has fatigue and not plain worn out rusted through . hope that helps u decide

you need a mig with a low amperage for car body

if you try with an arc (stick) you will be wasting your time and cash

afraid there are 2 routes into hobby welding

route one... the "cheap" route

• you buy a crap welder "because the price is right"
• you struggle for a period of time, with crap welds and nothing to show for it
• then decide you have spent your hard earned and are "going to make it work".... and spend more time & money in an effort to make it work
• Next you either chuck it in or decide you need a better welder & will spend sufficient to get one.

Route 2 the "expensive route"

• you take all the advice you can get & save up for the machine you are going to buy at the end of route one without wasting the time & cost of a crap welder
• Within a fairly short period of time you are producing adaquate welds and enjoying yourself
• welding is something "you just do" rather than something you mess about with for hours with nothing to show for it

for what you want have a look around here for Clarke mig welders ( not no gas mig)

Only way to do it without the right kit is to get it done by someone who has. If you use the wrong tools, you will just destroy the workpiece. As has been pointed out above, you need a MIG with a low CURRENT setting, (not sure what this amperage word is :-) ), so that you can weld without blowing great holes. Phil, you could try it without a welder.
Gaffer tape, cable ties and blu-tack would probably work but if you intend to sell these cars and not have people banging down your door telling you their exhaust has fallen off then get yourself a mig welder and do the job properly.
Even something like a Clarke pro90 would do you.

Phil, Are you making an exhaust fit a different car?
I buy exhausts and they, more or less, fit with a bit of tweaking.
Never bought one that needed bits welding on.
Have a word with a car spares bod for clamps that bolt onto exhaust pipes.
TBH something that I have made a mess of is that humour rarely travels well on forums, what is firking hilairious to ME sounds when someone else reads it.
As a kid I had a couple of old chatty MG's, I went and did a load of sweeping/donkey work for a local MG repairer and he taught me loads of stuff about my cars.
Stick with it cos no one here was a bazzin' welder when they started, it takes time and just hope you stick with it.
