I'm getting a pillar drill this weekend hopefully, it isnt the crap that is produced today, im getting a meddings pillar drill! i cant wait to get it. It is the first machine for the workshop, next thing will be portamig (well i hope so anyway!). Photos will be coming your way soon!

Can remember my first pillar drill, after years and years of drilling with and burning out Black & Decker drills...was sheer pleasure being able to drill with ease and accuracy.

Nice one James, good old Meddings should do you well for quite a long time, bit of quality......

Good bit of kit. Get some cutting oil to use when you drill holes too. Also, maybe, screwfix do a box of drill bits in labelled graduations very cheap. Its a nice way to organise your bits. The drills in the box are pretty crap quality, but as they break or go blunt you can replace that size with a decent one, and the box just keeps everything tidy - also nice to start off with a decent range of sizes. I think 1 - 13mm is about a tenner.

thanks for the advice chaps, with regards to bits i will use my dads metal drills (he is a chippy by trade). It is a cheap drill tho at £40 but needs to be converted to single phase!

Forty quid, sounds like you got a bargain there! You could fit a single phase motor or perhaps better to use an inverter, others will be able to advise on the pros and cons. torque and variable speed etc.

not bad quality either. i bought a set of 1 - 10mm from them, 0.5mm incriments, and they stay sharp for ages when used in a pillar drill. havent had to sharpen them since i blunted an 8mm trying to drill through a thick bit of stainless

Mmm, I beg to differ, frankly they are utter crap, I only bought it for the box! Still, as you say, at least you can get some holes drilled before you need to replace them, I must admit they last longer than I executed, but... not long!

Funnily enough, I thought I knew how to drill holes. Whack the bit in and away you go. Now I know better, starting with a pilot hole and working my way up, using cutting oil if necessary and maintaining decent pressure. It seems obvious now but I wasted quite a few drills before...

Not to be glib, but you'll feel it when the cutting edge goes off the bit. It'll stop making two flutes of even swarf, and start getting hot instead of cutting.
That meddings is what is called a sensitive drill by its proper name, and you'll feel the change in pressure through the feed mechanism too.

I had one of them and it was in a right shape with bent quill etc so I bought another drill to take the quill out of and ended up renovating the other dp instead! Today it lives on as a stand for my boring bar, and shortly I'm going to convert it into being a stand for my boring bar AND a nodding donkey rigid hone setup
If you hit the jackpot, its got a morse taper quill, but the norm is a reverse jacobs taper on the end of the spindle.

i have got it home!!

1. It is three phase, i knew about it but i have got to work out the cheepest method?

2. I have got a feeling the return spring is on the way out, how do i get a replacement?

3. It doesnt have a chuck key, so i will need to get the numbers of of the chuck key.

But on the plus side there is no play in the spindle what so ever, not even at full travel and i got a free drill bit

Ps. if anyone needs the serial number to help with identifing part, here it is; Dbt 9376

Single phase motor with a home made adapter plate did it for me, there is usually adjustment on return springs. I opted for a replacement MT2 keyless chuck for convenience mainly.

i think he means, there is adjustment for the spring, and he then opted for the keyless chuck, so yo wont need a chuck key? lol

I need to know the speed of the electric motor to order a new one but some plonker has painted over the sticker with the data on. so is there a way to work out the speed. I cannot turn the motor on. any help is apperciated.

i used a meddings drill in college the other day and it returned to its original position quickly but my one doesnt, it winds out very easy but on the return it needs some incouragement.
