Take evidence that you have booked it if you can - at the very least have the phone number of the garage you're taking it to so if you are stopped, the police officer can phone up to confirm whether it is booked in or not.
I didn't try it but I wonder if the 'system' would have let me tax the bike back to the start of April, with only a week's MOT left...

There's an interesting point here: my bike was recently due an MOT so I booked it in a week beforehand as I was busy on the day it'd expire (1st May).
The tax ran out in October '11. So technically I was riding an insured, MOTed bike with no tax, which is a crime!

From direct.gov.uk:
Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover.
This also applies to vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at:
a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station
an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test station
As Robotstar5 says, take a nice direct route to a nearby test station to avoid looking like you're taking liberties

yea but what happens if it fails the mot ? I Presume its not legal to drive it home again
Unless it's classed as a too dangerous to drive failure, you are OK to drive home.
